This study examines how the classical acting principles of commedia dell’arte are creatively reinterpreted in Yorgos Lanthimos’s film The Favourite (2018) through the lens of embodied performance. Rather than merely replicating traditional archetypes, the film’s three main characters structurally echo the types of commedia dell’arte—the Dottore, Harlequin, and Pantalone—while simultaneously subverting their core traits within a modern context. By analyzing Sarah, Abigail, and Queen Anne’s distinct physical rhythms, gesture vocabularies, and spatial dynamics, this paper reveals how bodily performance operates as a central vehicle for negotiating power and identity. The study identifies two critical modes of physical expression ‘extended stillness’ and the ‘amplification of micro-expressions’which replace overt exaggeration with tension, restraint, and strategic emotional modulation. In The Favourite, power is not an abstract condition but a visibly enacted and contested force, shaped through gaze, posture, breath, and control of space. Ultimately, this research argues that The Favourite is not a period piece that mimics classical form, but a radical performative experiment that uses classical theatrical models to interrogate the instability of modern power, identity, and affect. The paper contributes a new methodological framework for analyzing embodied performance in film and expands the possibilities of acting theory by bridging traditional stylization and contemporary cinematic expression.

본 연구는 요르고스 란티모스 감독의 영화〈더 페이버릿〉(The Favourite, 2018)에서 배우들이 수행하 는 신체 중심 연기 양식을 코메디아 델 아르테(Commedia dell’Arte)의 고전적 연기 전통과의 연관성 속에 서 분석하였다. 코메디아 델 아르테는 고정된 캐릭터 유형, 과장된 제스처, 반복과 정지의 리듬, 희극적 과잉과 신체 중심 표현을 핵심으로 하는 즉흥극 형식이며, 역사적으로 배우의 신체 움직임을 통해 감정 과 권력을 구체화해온 연기 전통이다. 본 논문은 고전적 연기 양식이 현대 영화 속에서 어떻게 해체되고 변형되며, 신체 중심 연기를 통해 어떤 새로운 미학적 구조로 재편되는지를 배우의 신체 수행을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 분석 대상은 주인공 앤 여왕, 사라, 애비게일 세 인물이며, 이들의 신체 리듬, 제스처, 시 선, 공간 점유 방식 등을 중심으로 인물 간 감정 흐름과 권력 역학이 어떻게 드러나는지를 살폈다. 각 인 물은 판탈로네, 도토레, 아를레키노와 같은 코메디아 델 아르테의 전형적 캐릭터를 기반으로 하되, 이를 현대적으로 해석하여 감정 억제, 내면화된 긴장, 리듬의 변화 등으로 변주한다. 반복과 정지, 리듬의 대조, 침묵과 시선의 지연 등의 전략은 단순한 희극적 효과를 넘어서, 인물 간의 심리적 관계와 권력 이동 을 섬세하게 표현하는 핵심 장치로 작용한다.〈더 페이버릿〉은 고전 희극 양식을 단순히 재현하는 데 그치지 않고, 그 형식적 외피를 해체하면서도 신체 표현의 핵심 원리를 현대적 맥락에 맞게 재구성한다. 이를 통해 배우의 신체는 감정적 강도와 사회적 권위, 심리적 거리와 서사의 긴장을 동시에 구현하는 미 학적 수행 공간으로 작동한다. 본 연구는 전통 연기 양식의 현대적 활용 방안을 제시하고, 연기 연구에서 신체성과 수행성의 중요성을 재조명함으로써 연기 이론의 확장에 기여하고자 한다.
