This study examines how the regional bases of Japan’s three major all-female revue troupes— Takarazuka Revue, OSK Nippon Revue Company, and Shochiku Kagekidan (SKD)— influenced their respective fates. Among the many all-female revue troupes founded before World War II, only Takarazuka Revue and OSK, both based in the Kansai region, have survived to the present day, while Tokyo-based SKD has dissolved. By analyzing the characteristics and locations of their home theaters, this paper explores the reasons behind their divergent trajectories and the role the Kansai region played in sustaining Japan’s unique all-female revue culture. These troupes initially functioned as attraction shows—entertainment features offered alongside other amusements within leisure facilities to enhance their overall appeal. However, the nature of these attraction shows varied depending on the characteristics of each troupe’s home base. This paper demonstrates that, following the diversification of Japan’s leisure activities in the 1960s—a period during which the popularity of all-female revues declined—differences in the type of attraction shows influenced the subsequent survival or dissolution of each troupe.
