This paper examines the theme of Expo 2025 held in Osaka and how it is architecturally embodied. Focusing on the Expo’s symbolic structure, the “Grand Roof ” designed by Sou Fujimoto, it analyzes how the architect’s vision of a ‘primodial future’ intersects with the growing interest in wooden architecture and the Expo’s stated goals for sustainable development. In particular, the paper explores the rise of timber architecture—emerging as a cutting-edge material of the 21st century in place of steel and concrete—as a lens through which to understand the challenges and aspirations faced by contemporary Japanese architecture and society. The spectacular showcase of wooden architecture at the Expo 2025 aims to display Japan’s technological innovation in timber construction and to respond to the global climate crisis. However, such efforts, unfolding on a nationalist stage like the World Expo, are not immune to ideological impulses of nationalism or the risks of greenwashing often associated with mega-events branded as sustainable. By examining the wide spectrum of approaches to timber construction, including alternative small-scale timber projects such as Atelier Bow-Wow’s post-disaster reconstruction design, this paper assesses both the possibilities and limitations of wood as a material for future architecture. Whether the current enthusiasm for timber architecture proves to be a passing trend or an instance of exaggerated greenwashing—or whether it can genuinely serve as an architectural response to the Anthropocene crisis that transcends the modernist paradigm—remains an open question. Nevertheless, the multiplicity of experiments and discussions around timber construction unfolding through the platform of the Expo invites reflection on the limitations of modern architecture based on steel and concrete, while offering a critical opportunity to imagine new modes of production, consumption, and circulation in architecture.

이 글은 2025년 오사카・간사이 만국박람회의 주제가 무엇이며, 그것이 건축적으로 어떻게 구현되는지에 관한 연구이다. 이를 위해 박람회의 상징물 ‘대지붕 링’을 중심으로 설계자 후지모토 소우의 건축론과 최근 일본 건축계에 불고 있는 목조 건축 열풍, 박람회의 지속가능발전 목표가 교차하는 지점에서 박람회 건축을 분석한다. 박람회에 연출된 숲과 나무의 스펙터클은 목조 기술 분야에서 일본의 기술 혁신을 과시하고, 전지구적인 기후 위기에 대응한다는 취지에서 기획되었다. 그러나 박람회라는 국가주의적 무대가 지닌 민족주의적 충동과 메가 이벤트가 빠지기 쉬운 그린워싱의 함정에서 자유롭지 못하다. 이 글은 박람회의 목조 파빌리온과 함께, 박람회에 초대받지 않은 소규모의 대안적인 목조 건축 운동 — 예컨대 아뜰리에 바우와우의 재난 복구 활동 — 을 논의하며 목조건축을 둘러싼 다양한 스펙트럼의 실험을 살펴본다. 현재의 목조건축 열풍이 일시적 유행이나 과장된 그린워싱으로 그칠지, 혹은 근대건축의 패러다임을 넘어 인류세의 위기를 돌파할 수 있는 실질적 대안이 될 수 있을지는 아직 미지수다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 박람회라는 플랫폼을 통해 전개된 목조건축에 대한 다양한 논의와 실험은 철과 콘크리트로 대변되는 근대건축의 한계를 성찰하게 하며, 건축의 새로운 생산・소비・유통 방식을 상상할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 21세기 첨단 재료로 부상한 목조 건축을 둘러싼 다양한 논의를 살펴봄으로써, 미래 건축으로서 목조건축이 갖는 가능성과 한계를 비판적으로 검토하고, 일본 건축과 일본 사회가 당면한 과제와 비전, 한계를 논의한다.
