A sermon comprises both its content─the sermon itself─and the act of its delivery, that is, preaching. For John MacArthur, one of the most influential expository preachers of the twenty-first century, the content of the sermon constitutes its most essential element. According to MacArthur, no amount of the preacher’s eloquence, zeal, or rhetorical technique can compensate for a deficiency in substantive content. Conversely, however excellent the content may be, if the delivery is poor, the message will fail to reach its audience. For this reason, MacArthur insists that preachers must remain constantly aware that their manner of delivery can either assist or hinder the effectiveness of the sermon. MacArthur identifies four characteristics that mark powerful preaching: the preacher’s passion, the clarity of the sermon’s content, the preacher’s authority, and the empowering work of the Holy Spirit. These characteristics, as presented by MacArthur, are not merely his personal convictions or isolated instructions. Rather, when explaining these traits, he frequently appeals to examples from church history, citing Reformed preachers who longed for and practiced biblical preaching. This connection demonstrates that the four characteristics MacArthur outlines are consistent with principles of sermon delivery historically upheld within the Reformed tradition. This study examines each of these four characteristics of effective sermon delivery as articulated by MacArthur and argues that Reformed preaching, which has long emphasized the importance of delivery alongside sound doctrine, has likewise regarded these traits as essential. Not only those figures frequently referenced by MacArthur─such as Richard Baxter, Charles Spurgeon, and Martyn Lloyd-Jones─but also other prominent Reformed preachers, including William Perkins, John Angell James, and Charles Bridges, similarly emphasized these four elements of compelling sermon delivery. In conclusion, MacArthur’s teaching on sermon delivery can be seen to stand firmly within the Reformed homiletical tradition.
