This paper is a study on the teacher-student lineage. academic connections characteristics of the scholarship, and the Rule of Conduct in Public officer of Jo Heon(趙憲, 1544–1592). The study reveals that Jo Heon dedicated himself to rigorous and sincere scholarly pursuits from an early age, engaging in extensive learning. He participated in the revision of Complete Collection of Zhu Zi(朱子大全) and Classified Conversations of Zhu Zi(朱子語類), alongside Ryu Hee-chun(柳希春, 1513–1577) and demonstrated a profound understanding of Zhou Yi(周易, The Book of Changes). Upon reaching adulthood, Jo Heon studied under three prominent mentors: Yi Ji-ham (李之菡, 1517–1578), Seong Hon (成渾, 1535–1598), and Yi I(李珥, 1536–1584). His relationships with these teachers were respectively characterized as mutual enhancement in teaching and learning(敎學相長), patient and insightful guidance(循循善誘), and nurturing influence like a spring breeze and rain(春風化雨). In summary, Jo Heon was both a highly accomplished scholar and a loyal military leader who served his country as a righteous army commander. He maintained an objective academic stance and did not strictly adhere to a particular school of thought. This paper aims to provide a renewed perspective on Jo Heon’s position and significance in the history of Neo-Confucianism.

이 논문은 조헌(趙憲, 1544~1592)의 師承⋅學脈⋅學問 및 출처관(出處觀)에 관한 연구이다. 연구의 결과 조헌은 어려서부터 학문적 성실하게 학문에 열중하며, 폭넓게 공부하였다. 유희춘(柳希春, 1513~1577)과 함께 진행한 『朱子大全』과 『朱子語類』의 교정에 참여하였고, 『周易』에도 조예가 깊었음을 확인하였다. 조헌이 성인이 된 이후 스승으로 모신 이지함(李之菡, 1517~1578), 성혼(成渾, 1535~1598), 이이(李珥, 1536~1584) 세 스승과의 관계를 각각 敎學相長, 循循善誘, 春風化雨의 관계로 설명하였다. 종합적으로 조헌은 의병장으로서 나라에 충성한 군인의 면모와 함께 학문적 성취가 매우 높은 학자였다. 또한 학파적 관점에 치우치지 않는 處世와 객관적 학문태도를 가졌다. 이 논문을 통하여 조헌의 성리학사적 위치와 의미를 새롭게 인식하는 계기가 되리라고 생각한다.
