The aim of this article is to argue what moral education should aim for in order to promote moral progress. To this end, this article will proceed as follows. First, I will discuss how the nature and types of moral progress should be understood from my ‘naturalistic’ perspective. From a naturalistic perspective, moral progress can be understood as a process of solving moral problems that arise when humans live together as a species. Next, I will argue that in order to overcome various moral problems and navigate the path of moral progress, it is necessary to cultivate ‘meta-moral cognition.’ Finally, I will present specific moral education methodologies to help students cultivate meta-moral cognition.

이 논문의 목적은 도덕적 진보의 촉진을 위한 도덕교육이 무엇을 지 향해야 하는지에 대한 주장을 펼치는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 다 음과 같이 전개될 것이다. 먼저 필자의 ‘자연주의적’(naturalistic) 관점 에서 도덕적 진보의 본성과 유형이 어떻게 이해되어야 하는지에 대해 서 논할 것이다. 자연주의적 관점에서, 도덕적 진보는 인간이라는 종 (種)이 함께 살아감에 있어서 발생하는 도덕적 문제를 해결하고 한계 를 극복하는 과정으로 이해될 수 있다. 다음으로 다양한 차원의 도덕 적 문제를 극복함으로써 다원적인 도덕적 진보의 길을 헤쳐 나가기 위 해서는 ‘도덕적 메타인지’(meta-moral cognition)를 함양할 필요가 있음을 주장할 것이다. 마지막으로 학생들이 도덕적 메타인지 능력을 함양하는 것을 돕기 위한 구체적인 도덕교육 방법론을 제시할 것이다.
