This paper aims to demonstrate that Kant’s duty of virtue to promote the happiness of others provides an ethical foundation for social solidarity. To this end, I will first offer a detailed explanation of the meaning and nature of the duty to promote others’ happiness (the “altruistic duty of virtue”), and then justify why this obligation qualifies as a duty in Kantian ethics. Next, I show that the conditions for fulfilling the duty of virtue to promote others’ happiness are essential prerequisites for the possibility of social solidarity, thereby elucidating the conceptual connection between the two. By fulfilling the duty to promote the happiness of others, each individual participates in one another’s lives and well-being of others, and as a result, this duty establishes moral interdependence among individuals. Furthermore, by fulfilling this duty as “the duty that all human beings owe to one another” (MS VI:450), a network of reciprocal duties emerges, providing a framework in which each person’s well-being becomes an object of collective concern. In particular, by fulfilling this duty, members of society can construct social solidarity grounded in the common pursuit of the highest good.
