Product Placement (PPL) is gradually replacing traditional TV advertisements. While some studies have examined the effectiveness of PPL, there is very little research on whether consumers actually process PPL in real-time and, if they do, what cognitive processes are involved. This study used electroencephalography (EEG), which can measure brain activity in real-time, to verify whether consumers' brains actually process PPL. The study also examined whether contextual PPL (which aligns with drama story) and non-contextual PPL (which does not align) have different effects on consumers' cognitive processing. Additionally, through delayed recognition tests, the study investigated how contextual and non-contextual PPL relate to memory. ERP (Event-Related Potential) analysis results showed differences in ERP waveforms between the presence and absence of PPL in drama footage during the 100-250ms time period. Furthermore, contextual PPL showed larger waveforms than non-contextual PPL during the 250~550ms time period, and this tendency was maintained only in the group with high accuracy in the delayed recognition task. Therefore, this study proposes, based on cognitive neurological evidence, that PPL is actually processed within video content and that contextual PPL may be more effective than non-contextual PPL.

간접광고인 PPL은 점차 전통적 TV 광고를 대체하고 있다. 이에 몇몇 연구들이 PPL의 인지적 효과에 관해 연구를 진행했지만, 소비자가 실제로 PPL을 실시간적 으로 처리하는지 그리고 처리한다면 어떤 인지적 과정이 진행되고 있는지에 대한 연구가 매우 부족하다. 본 연구는 뇌의 활동을 실시간으로 측정할 수 있는 뇌파 측정법을 활용해 소비자의 뇌가 PPL을 실제로 처리하는 지를 검증하였고 또한 드라마의 전개에 부합하는 맥락적 PPL과 부합하지 않는 비맥락적 PPL이 소비자의 인지적 처리에 다른 영향을 끼치는 지도 검증하였다. 그리고 지연 재인 검사를 통해 맥락적 비맥락적 PPL이 기억과 어떤 관련성이 있는지도 검증하였다. ERP 분석 결과 드라마 영상 속 PPL의 존재 여부에 따른 ERP 파형의 차이가 100~250ms 시간대에서 발생하였다. 그리고 맥락적 PPL이 비맥락적 PPL보다 250~550ms 시 간대에서 더 큰 파형이 나타났으며 이 경향성은 지연 재인 과제에서 정확도가 높은 집단에서만 유지되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 PPL이 영상 속에서 실제로 처리되며 맥락에 부합하는 PPL이 부합하지 않는 PPL에 비해 더 효과적일 수 있음을 인지신경과학적 증거를 통해 제안하였다.
