Goryeo people undertook travels for a variety of reasons and purposes. While some traveled purely for the sake of sightseeing, most travels fell into four general categories. These included escapist travels(to avoid political crises), concurrent travels(in which one combined official duties or personal affairs with travel), and religious travels(undertaken for the purpose of ascetic practice or pilgrimage). Yi Gyubo, a representative literary figure of the mid-Goryeo period, set out on the road due to reasons such as refuge, exile, or filial visits to his parents, and took the opportunity to visit scenic spots located along major transportation routes. Thus, his travels were largely of a secondary nature. In contrast, Yi Kok, a prominent literary figure of the late Goryeo period, engaged in travel that bore a more intrinsic character. It is difficult to claim that his travels were entirely motivated by the desire for sightseeing, as they were in part a means to escape from political turmoil. Nevertheless, in terms of content, Yi Kok’s travels placed greater emphasis on the enjoyment of the travel experience itself compared to those of Yi Gyubo.

고려인은 다양한 사연과 목적을 가지고 여행을 떠났다. 유람 자체가 목적인 경우도 있었으나 대체로 세 가지 배경에서 유람을 즐겼다. 즉, 정치적 위기를 회피하는 수단으로 여장을 꾸린 회피형 유람, 공무를 수행하거나 개인적 용무를 보면서 여행을 병행하는 겸행형 유람, 수행이나 순례를 목적으로 떠난 종교형 유람이 그것이다. 고려 중기의 대표적인 문인인 이규보는 피난·유배·覲親 등의 사유로 길을 나섰다가 교통로에 있는 명승지를 아울러 다녔다. 그런 점에서 그의 유람은 부차적 성격이 강했다. 그에 비해 고려 후기의 대표적 문인인 이곡의 유람은 여행 그 자체를 즐긴 본연적 성격을 지녔다. 물론 그가 유람을 떠났던 배경만 보면, 유람 자체가 목적인 본질적인 유람이었다고 하기는 어렵다. 정치적 위기를 피하기 위한 수단으로서 여행을 택했기 때문이다. 하지만 내용적 측면에서 보면 이곡의 유람은 이규보의 그것보다 유람 자체를 즐긴 측면이 컸다.
