This study explores the creative background and textual analysis of Seo Jeong-ju’s poems “Jigudo.” The discussion proceeds in three parts. First, the context of the poems' creation is examined in relation to Seo Jeong-ju’s literary debut in 1936 through the Dong-A Ilbo New Year's Literary Contest, the short-lived launch and closure of the literary journal Poets' Village in the same year, and the broader sociopolitical atmosphere marked by the Japanese colonial regime’s oppressive censorship. These intertwined circumstances inflicted what the study refers to as ‘psychosomatic wounds’ on the young poet, shaping his early aesthetic orientation. Second, the four “Jigudo” poems are read as erotically charged works grounded in Seo’s experiences on the island. Yet, the personal symbolism they deploy transcends corporeal desire, instead functioning as a metaphysical catalyst that dramatizes the poet’s struggle to reclaim and reaffirm his creative will. Third, the emotional and poetic resonance of Seogwipo extends beyond the specific moment of the Jigudo period and recurs throughout Seo’s later work. The locale resurfaces as both a site of memory and an object of longing, revealing the poet’s enduring impulse toward return. Ultimately, the Jigudo experience provided Seo Jeong-ju with a crucial means of navigating and overcoming the existential and creative crises he faced during his formative years. By foregrounding this period, the present study aims to offer insight not only into the literary substance of Seo’s early poetry, but also into a deeply human aspect of the poet that shaped his emerging voice.

이 논문은 ʻ지귀도 시ʼ의 창작 배경과 작품 분석에 관한 연구이다. 논의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, ʻ지귀도 시 창작 배경ʼ은 1936년 서정주가 동아일보 신춘문예를 통해 막 등단한 전후의 문단 상황, 1936년 󰡔시인부락󰡕 창간과 폐간, 일제의 강압적 통제가 가장 심했던 당시 시대상황 등이다. 이와 같은 일련의 상황들이 신인 서정주에게 ʻ심신의 상흔ʼ을 일으 키는 요인으로 작용했다. 둘째, 지귀도 시 4편은 지귀도의 체험을 소재로 한 에로티시즘적 작품이다. 그런데 시인이 보여준 개인적 상징은 육체성을 뛰어넘어 창작 의지의 회복이라 는 형이상학적 상징 의미를 극대화시키는 촉매로 작용한다. 셋째, 지귀도 시절 이후에도 서귀포의 체험들은 시적 소재 또는 향수의 대상으로서 그의 작품에 소환되었다. 그 작품들 을 통해 그의 서귀포 귀소 의향을 읽을 수 있다. 지귀도 시절의 체험은 서정주에게 들이닥친 한계상황을 극복하게 한 원동력이 되었다. 본고의 논의를 통해 문학적 공과 이전에 인간 서정주의 일면을 들여다봄으로써 그의 초기 시를 이해하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
