This study examines how the unspoken memories of the Jeju April 3 Incident are narrativized through sensory experiences and places in Han Kang’s novel We Do Not Part. In the novel, Jeju’s natural environment, objects, and spaces function not merely as background, but as sites imprinted with pain and memory, where historical trauma is surfaced through the characters’ sensory perceptions. The objects and spaces left behind by Jung-sim serve as catalysts of affective resonance for In-seon, who ethically receives the painful memories through acts of care and documentation. Kyung-ha, too, is transformed into a responsive subject through her encounter with In-seon’s story, forming a structure in which unspoken pain is conveyed through the flow of sensation. We Do Not Part literary shapes an ethical relationship through affective resonance and approaches the history of April 3 through the method of sensing and responding. In doing so, the novel suggests the possibility of ethically sensing and receiving a silenced past through literature. By analyzing the narrative mechanisms of memory mediated by sensation and place, this study highlights the ethical potential of literature to respond to the pain of silence.

본고는 한강의 소설 『작별하지 않는다』를 중심으로 말해지지 못한 4·3의 기억이 감각 과 장소를 매개로 서사화되는 양상을 고찰하였다. 제주의 자연, 사물, 공간은 단순한 배경 이 아니라 고통과 기억이 각인된 장소로 기능하며, 인물의 감각을 통해 역사적 상처가 표면화된다. 정심이 남긴 사물과 공간은 인선에게 감응의 계기가 되고, 인선은 돌봄과 기 록을 통해 고통의 기억을 윤리적으로 수용해 나간다. 경하 또한 인선의 이야기를 통해 침묵의 기억에 응답하는 주체로 변화하며, 말해지지 못한 고통이 감각의 흐름 속에서 전해 지는 구조가 형성된다. 『작별하지 않는다』는 감응을 통한 윤리적 관계를 문학적으로 형상 화하며, 감응과 응답의 방식으로 4·3의 역사를 다룬다. 이를 통해 문학이 침묵된 과거를 윤리적으로 감각하고 수용할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 본 연구는 감각과 장소를 매개로 한 기억 서사의 작동 방식을 분석함으로써, 문학이 침묵의 고통에 응답하는 윤리적 가능성 을 밝히는 데 의의를 갖는다.
