The Buddhist paintings of Baengnyeonsa Temple, Seoul were produced during Korea’s modern transition period from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. As such, they exhibit the characteristic features of the period as well as the regional characteristics that contributed to Buddhist activities in the capital area. It is also significant that among the several major Buddhist temples, this temple, built during the Korean Empire period, became a highly prominent temple, reflecting the times and circumstances of the country. In particular, these Buddhist paintings attract attention as valuable cultural heritages due to the fact that when they were enshrined in the main halls of the temple, namely Yaksajeon Hall and Siwangjeon Hall, they retained their characteristic composition and original form, and to the fact that they embody wishes for rebirth in the Pure Land after death based on belief in and prayer to Amitabha Buddha, which is the origin of the temple’s initial name “Gyeongtijeol or Jeongtojeol ,” meaning “Temple of the Pure Land .” Although the Buddhist paintings of Baengnyeonsa Temple have been relatively well preserved thanks to the temple’s dedicated efforts and profound devotion, it will be necessary to hold in-depth discussions on the preservation of the paintings in the future, as they continue to serve as images for worship in the Buddhist sanctuary. In addition, it is necessary to recover the lost Folding Screen of the Eight Great Events of the Sakyamuni Buddha , whose existence has been made known by the Buddhist monk Jongjeong.

백련사의 불화들은 19세기 후반에서 20세기 전반에 이르는 시기인 근대 전환기에 제작되어 시기적인 특색은 물론 수도권의 활발했던 불사 활동의 결과를 잘 보여주는 지역적 특징까지 잘 보여 준다. 몇 차례의 주요 불사 중 대한제국기의 불사가 두드러지는 사정도 시대상황을 반영하고 있다 는 점에서 흥미롭다. 특히 주불전인 약사전과 시왕전의 불화들이 봉안되었을 당시의 특징적인 구성과 원형을 거의 지니고 있는 점, 그리고 극락왕생으로의 염원을 담은 내용을 통해 ‘경티절’, 즉 정토절이라 불렸던 백련사의 성격을 잘 드러내고 있다는 점 등에서도 문화유산으로서의 가치가 주목된다. 백련사의 불화들은 사찰의 노력과 정성으로 비교적 양호한 상태의 불화들이지만, 여전히 법 당 내에서 기능하는 예배상으로서 차후의 보존에 대해서도 심도 깊은 논의가 필요할 것으로 생각 한다. 더불어 종정 스님께서 언급하셔서 존재를 알게 되었던 작품들, 현재는 없어진 칠성각의 <석 가팔상도> 소병풍의 정보도 발굴되길 기대해 본다.
