In many parts of Gangwon-do, the 14th and 15th days of the first lunar month are nicknamed Yeoreumnal(Summer Day) and Gaeulnal(Autumn Day) respectively. In cities and counties such as Gangneung-si, Yangyang-gun, Jeongseon-gun, Pyeongchang-gun, Wonju-si, Hoengseonggun, and Yeongwol-gun, more seasonal customs are observed on the 15th than on the 14th. However, in Chuncheon-si, Hwacheon-gun, Yanggu-gun, Inje-gun, and Hongcheon-gun, the number of customs performed on the 14th was greater, or the number of customs performed on the 14th and 15th were almost the same. In the case of Deowipalgi (the custom of “selling the heat”), it is observed on the 14th in Gangneung-si, Yangyanggun, Chuncheon-si, and Hwacheon-gun. In contrast, in Jeongseon-gun, Pyeongchang-gun, and Yeongwol-gun, it is practiced on the 15th. In Wonju-si, Hongcheon-gun, Hoengseong-gun, Yanggu-gun, and Inje-gun, the date varies depending on the village. Some observe it on the 14th, others on the 15th. Although Jeongwol Daeboreum(the Great Full Moon Festival) officially falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, in practice, events often begin on the 14th. So in Gangwon-do, it is customary to eat ogokbap(five-grain rice) on the 14th, the day before the full moon, and glutinous rice or white rice on the 15th.
