During the Japanese colonial period, the Jeju Buddhist Association established and operated the Jeju Middle School Training Center, a secondary education institution. The founding of the center was part of the association’s community engagement efforts to meet the Jeju community’s demand for secondary education. The association’s goal of promoting local culture, combined with its leadership’s involvement in education-related activities, laid the foundation for the establishment of the center. From the time of its inception, the Jeju Middle School Training Center expressed its aim to be established as a general high school (a secondary school equivalent) and organized community support activities for this purpose. Organizations such as the Association for the Promotion of Jeju Middle School and the Osaka Sponsorship Association for Jeju Middle School were formed to raise funds. When the activities of these groups stagnated, the Jeju Buddhist Association took over by donating all necessary financial resources to support the efforts of the Association for Promotion of Jeju Secondary School Establishment. Despite the challenges of raising funds and the authorities’ education policies, which prioritized vocational schools, the efforts of the Jeju Buddhist Association and the Jeju community to establish a secondary education institution were significant. The operation of the Jeju Middle School Training Center was meaningful as it fulfilled the community’s aspiration for secondary education. Furthermore, it showcased the community’s persistent efforts to establish such an institution despite the difficulties.

일제강점기 제주불교협회는 중등교육기관인 제주중학강습원을 설립하여 운영하였다. 제주중학강습원의 설립은 제주도에 중등교육기관 고등보통학 교가 필요하다는 제주 사회의 요구를 실현 시키는 제주불교협회의 제주 사회 참여 활동 중 하나이다. 제주불교협회의 지방문화 발전이라는 활동 목적과 제주불교협회 임원의 제주 교육 관련 활동 등을 통해 제주중학강 습원 설립을 주도할 수 있었던 배경을 확인할 수 있다. 사설 학술강습소로 인가받은 제주중학강습원은 설립 당시부터 고등보통 학교로 변경 설립해 나갈 것을 표명하여, 제주 사회의 후원 활동을 조직하 였다. 제주중학기성협찬회, 제주중학기성 오사카(大阪)협찬회를 조직하여 기금 조성에 노력하였고, 후원 단체의 활동이 정체되면서는 제주불교협회 가 제주중학강습원의 재원을 전부 기부하기로 하여 제주도중등학교설립기 성회 활동을 지원하기도 하였다. 제주불교협회와 제주 사회의 고등보통학교 설립 노력은 기금 모금의 어 려움과 당대 실업학교 중심의 교육정책 등으로 실현하기 어려웠다. 그럼에 도 불구하고 제주불교협회는 제주 사회의 열망이었던 중등교육기관 고등 보통학교 설립을 위해 제주사회와 함께 부단히 노력하였다는 점을 큰 의 의로 꼽을 수 있다.
