Venerable Dongsan(東山大宗師, 1890~1965), a prominent Seon master of Korean Buddhsim, was a leader Beomeosa Temple but also one of the key figures in the history of contemporary Korean Buddhism. Dongsan played a pivotal role in driving the Buddhist Purification Movement(1954~1962) and continued to serve as a leader of the Bhikkhu faction until the end. This paper utilizes oral testimonies that have been published and extends the scope up until 1962 to explore Dongsan's activities related to the Buddhist Purification Movement and its significance. Dongsan’s role in the Buddhist Purification Movement is summarized in five points. First, he was a mediator and practitioner who inherited the teachings of Baek Yong-seong(白龍城, 1863~1940) and connected them to the Buddhist Purification Movement. Second, Dongsan became a key advocate who recognized the urgency of the issues within the Buddhist community during the Korean War. Third, Dongsan served as a communicator of the Bhikkhu Order, directly engaging with President Syngman Rhee(李承晩, 1875~1965) during the Korean War and after the initiation of the Buddhist Purification Movement. Fourth, as the chief monk, Dongsan provided the principles and ideological foundation for the Purification movement. Fifth, through his moral conduct and compassion, he inspired the masses, garnering support from both monks and laypeople, thus ensuring the sustainability of the Purification movement. In the future, it is hoped that further research into Dongsan’s life and the role of Beomeosa Temple will offer a more comprehensive understanding of their place in modern Korean Buddhist history.

동산대종사(東山大宗師, 1890~1965)는 범어사의 고승이자 근현대 불교 사의 주역 중 한명이다. 그는 현대불교 교단을 재편한 불교정화운동 (1954~1962)을 추동하였으며, 마지막까지 비구승의 지도자로서 활약했 다. 이 논문은 그간 발굴된 자료와 구술증언에 기초하여, 동산의 불교정화 와 관련된 행적을 정리하고 그 의의를 살핀 것이다. 이 글에서는 불교정화운동에서 동산의 역할을 검토하여 그 위상을 다음 과 같이 밝혔다. 첫째, 동산은 일제강점기 백용성의 계율사상을 불교정화 운동으로 연결시킨 매개자였다. 둘째, 동산은 6·25 전쟁 중 비구승의 지위 를 절박하게 인식하고 자생적으로 정화운동을 발의한 주창자였다. 셋째, 동산은 6·25 전쟁기부터 불교정화운동기까지 이승만 대통령과 직접 소통 한 비구승단의 전달자였다. 넷째, 조계종정으로서 동산은 정화운동의 원칙 과 사상적 기반을 제공하였다. 다섯째, 수행자의 위의와 자비로 대중을 감화시키고 승려와 신도들의 지지를 이끌어내어 정화운동을 지속 가능하게 한 정화운동의 공헌자였다.
