This study sheds light on the status of Dongsan, a great monk of Beomeosa Temple. The specific content is the circumstances before and after Dongsan acquired the status as Yongseong’s chief disciple, and his character. To this end, the author considered the following aspects. First, the author found an opportunity to receive Yongseong’s teachings in Dongsan’s actions in Buddhism during the Japanese colonial period. He participated in the Manilcham Seon Association and supported the Daecheosikyuk Geonbaekseo. Second, the author found and organized the content of Dongsan receiving teachings from Yongseong. Yongseong received the Yongseong lineage in December 1936, and received the teachings around 1939. As a result, Dongsan acquired the status of a successor to Yongseong’s teachings. Third, the author found Dongsan’s actions immediately after Yongseong’s death, in which he inherited and implemented Yongseong’s ideas and spirit. He participated in Confucian dharma ceremonies, published a collection of materials called “Yongseong Seonsa Eorok”, established the Yongseong monument, and was in charge of the steps of Beomeosa Temple. Through this content, the author attempted to confirm that Dongsan was a constant disciple of Yongseong in Buddhism during the Japanese colonial period. In the future, he plans to find and organize the content that inherited Yongseong’s ideology in Dongsan’s activities after the liberation on August 15, 1945.

본 고찰은 범어사의 고승인 동산의 위상을 조명한 것이다. 그 구체적인 내용은 동산이 용성의 상수제자로서의 위상을 취득한 전후 사정과 성격을 살핀 것이다. 이를 위해서 필자는 다음과 같은 측면을 고려하였다. 첫째, 일제하 불교에서 동산의 행보에서 용성의 전법을 받을 수 있는 계 기를 찾았다. 그는 만일참선결사회에 참가, 대처식육 건백서를 지지한 내 용이었다. 둘째, 동산이 용성에게 전법을 받은 내용을 찾아 정리한 것이다. 동산은 1936년 11월에 용성 계맥을 전수받았고, 1938년 무렵에는 용성에게서 전 법게문을 받았다. 이로써 동산은 용성 법맥의 계승자라는 위상을 갖게 되 었다. 셋째, 동산은 용성 입적 직후, 용성 사상 및 정신을 계승하고 구현하였 던 행보를 찾았다. 그는 유교법회 참가, 『용성선사어록』이라는 자료집 발간, 용성 비석의 설립, 범어사 계단의 책임자 등이었다. 이와 같은 내용을 통하여 필자는 동산이 일제하 불교에서도 용성의 상 수제자라는 내용을 확인하고자 하였다. 추후에는 1945년 8·15해방 이후의 동산 행적에서 용성사상을 계승한 내용을 찾아 정리하겠다.
