This study analyzes the perception of the religions of the Mongol Empire as presented by Bar ʿEbroyo, a 13th-century Syrian Orthodox historian, in his Syriac Chronography(Maktbonut zabne). He adopts the renowned Persian work, The History of the World Conqueror, written by his contemporary Juwayni as a primary source. In his Chronography, Bar ‘Ebroyo describes the origins and transformation of Mongol religion, reflecting his perspective as a Syrian Christian theologian. Bar ʿEbroyo seeks to understand and explain the Mongols’ religious character by reinterpreting their belief in the sky God, the shamanism of the steppes, and the Buddhist elements through a Christian lens. This paper employs a comparative literary approach to examine how Bar ʿEbroyo cites, modifies, and integrates contemporary Persian material with his theological perspective. In addition, it sheds light on how Bar ʿEbroyo’s historiography transcends the purpose of conveying information by incorporating faithbased interpretations and communal messages. By exploring the medieval Syrian Christian perspective of Mongol religion, this study seeks to enhance understanding of Christianity in the Mongol-Persian world.

본고는 13세기 시리아 정교회의 역사가인 바르에브로요(Bar ‘Ebroyo) 가 그의 저작 『연대기(Maktbonut zabne)』에서 제시하는 몽골 제국의 종교 에 대한 인식을 분석한다. 그는 동시대 페르시아어 역사서인 주베이니의 『세계정복자의 역사』를 주요 자료로 삼아 몽골 종교의 기원과 변화 양상을 서술하면서, 시리아 기독교인으로서의 관점과 신학적 해석을 그의 본문에 투영하였다. 바르에브로요는 몽골의 하늘신 신앙, 초원의 샤머니즘과 주 술, 불교적 요소들을 기독교적 관점에서 재해석하며 몽골의 종교상을 이해 하고 설명하고자 하였다. 본고는 바르에브로요가 동시대의 역사 자료를 어 떻게 인용하고, 수정하며, 자신의 신학적 관점을 담아 서술했는지를 비교 문헌학적인 방법으로 분석한다. 또한 『연대기』에 나타난 바르에브로요의 역사 기술이 정보 전달의 목적을 넘어, 신앙적 해석과 공동체적 메시지를 내포하고 있음을 조명한다. 이를 통해 중세 시리아 기독교인이 인식한 몽 골의 종교 해석 방식을 고찰함으로써 몽골-페르시아 지역의 기독교 이해 를 심화시키고자 한다.
