This study explores a case of applying Generative AI, specifically ChatGPT 3.5, in an A1-level German language course offered as a general education subject at P University. Focusing on instructional design and the construction of prompts, the study investigates how generative AI can be effectively utilized in beginner-level German instruction. In this course, ChatGPT was used for exploring German cultural content, practicing grammar and vocabulary, and providing feedback on learner-generated writing. Given the learners’ beginner proficiency level, the primary goal was not to generate full texts using AI, but rather to enhance writing skills by revising and improving sentences written by the students themselves. The instructor provided a range of prompt examples‒from simple question formats to context-based expressions‒to guide learners in interacting meaningfully with the AI. Based on AIgenerated suggestions and feedback, personalized instruction and corrective learning were also made possible. This case study demonstrates the potential of generative AI to function as a teaching assistant in A1-level foreign language courses and highlights the importance of prompt design and pedagogical considerations in AI-integrated language education.

본 연구는 생성형 인공지능(Generative AI)인 챗GPT 3.5를 주요 AI 도구로 활용하여 P 대학교의 교양 외국어 A1 수준 독일어 수업에서 수행 한 사례를 중심으로 한다. 특히 수업 설계와 프롬프트(prompt) 구성 방식 을 통해, 생성형 AI가 초급 독일어 수업에서 어떤 방식으로 활용될 수 있 는지를 살펴본다. 해당 수업에서는 챗GPT 등의 AI 도구들을 독일지역학 관련 자료 탐 색, 문법 및 어휘 연습, 그리고 학습자가 작성한 문장에 대한 작문 피드백 제공에 활용하였다. 초급 학습자의 수준을 고려하여, 독일어로 직접 작문 을 생성하기보다는 학습자가 스스로 작성한 문장을 AI를 통해 수정·보완 함으로써 쓰기 역량을 강화하는 데 중점을 두었다. 교수자는 단순 질문형부터 상황 중심의 표현 유도형에 이르는 다양한 프롬프트 예시를 제공하여 학습자들이 AI와 효과적으로 상호작용할 수 있 도록 지원하였고, AI가 제공하는 표현 예시와 피드백을 바탕으로 개별 맞 춤형 지도가 가능하였다. 본 사례는 생성형 AI가 A1 수준의 외국어 수업에서 보조 교사로 활용 할 수 있는 가능성을 보여주며, 프롬프트 설계 역량의 중요성과 AI 활용의 교육적 방향성에 대해 시사점을 제공한다.
