With the introduction of new artistic materials and the expansion of artistic genres, the conservation of contemporary art has become increasingly difficult to achieve using traditional methods alone. Accordingly, the preservation of immaterial values—including the artist’s intention and a piece’s conceptual significance—has gained importance. In this study, the archive is proposed as a core strategy for addressing these challenges. An analysis of domestic and international case studies identified the essential role of the archive in the conservation of contemporary artworks. Furthermore, as the emphasis on immaterial values continues to grow, the role of the conservator is also required to expand—from a technician to a collaborator working in dialogue with the artist. The findings of this study will serve as foundational data for the new conservation practices for preserving contemporary artworks that employ diverse materials and genres.

현대미술은 신소재의 도입과 장르의 확장으로 인해 전통적인 보존 방법만으로는 충분히 보 존하기가 쉽지 않아, 작가의 의도나 개념 같은 비물질적 가치의 보존이 한층 더 중요해지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이를 위한 핵심 수단으로 작품 제작 과정에서 생산되는 관련 자료 등을 포함한 아카이 브를 제시하였으며, 국내외 사례를 분석하여 현대미술의 보존에서 아카이브가 핵심적 역할을 할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 현대미술의 보존에서 비물질적 가치의 중요도가 상승함에 따라, 컨서베 이터의 역할 역시 기술 수행과 함께 작가와 협업하는 협력자로서 확장이 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구가 향후 다양한 재질과 장르의 현대미술 보존에 활용될 수 있는 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대 한다.
