This study aimed to examine the impact of using webtoons in college-level English classes on students’ learning achievement, analyze their perceptions toward these classes, and assess webtoons’ value as a learning tool. To this end, we employed University Diary—a topic-centered webtoon that college students can easily understand and relate to. Data from the first and second achievement tests, semi-structured questionnaire, and learner logs were analyzed. The results revealed that learners were generally highly satisfied with English classes that utilized webtoons (76.3%). This satisfaction was attributable to the following reasons: fun and concentration, high relevance to college students’ real lives, efficiency in learning English expressions, and the stimulation of participation and interaction. Based on these findings, pedagogical recommendations vis-à-vis using webtoons are presented. Instructors must understand webtoons’ value and actively utilize them in their classes.

본 연구는 대학생을 대상으로 한 영어 수업에서 웹툰의 활용이 학습자들의 학습 성취도에 미치는 영향을 고찰 하고 이에 대한 학습자들의 인식을 분석하여 학습 도구로서 웹툰의 가치를 고찰해 보고자 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 대학생들이 쉽게 이해하고 공감할 수 있는 주제 중심의 웹툰인 <대학일기>를 활용하였다. 연구 결과 분석 을 위해 1차와 2차 성취도 테스트를 실시하였고 반구조화된 설문조사 및 학습자 정리 일지를 분석하였다. 연구 결과 학습자들은 웹툰을 활용한 영어 수업에 전반적으로 만족도가 높았으며(76.3%) 이러한 만족의 구체적인 이유로는 웹 툰을 통한 재미와 집중, 대학생 학습자들의 실생활과의 높은 관련성, 영어 표현 학습의 효율성, 참여 및 상호작용의 활성화인 것으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 웹툰 활용을 위한 교육적 제언을 제시하였다. 교수자로서 우리는 학습 도 구로서의 웹툰의 가치를 이해하고 수업에서 이를 적극 활용해야 할 것이다.
