This study examines male characters appearing in otome games by employing the Image Scale theory proposed by Shigeo Kobayashi (1991) and the Four Rules of Masculinity suggested by Brannon and Pleck (1976) as analytical frameworks. Focusing on 26 male characters from six representative Chinese otome games, the study extracted color attributes, classified them into quadrants, and constructed personality lexicons by integrating occupational settings. The degree of conformity to traditional masculinity was subsequently evaluated. The results reveal clear associations among visual color quadrants, personality traits, occupational identities, and players’ emotional perceptions. Furthermore, the analysis indicates a complex trend characterized by “maintenance of basic traditional masculinity combined with the integration of softness and sensitivity.” This study aims to demonstrate that contemporary female-oriented virtual romance content simultaneously reconstructs traditional gender norms and expands women’s subjective positions.

연구는 오토메 게임에 등장하는 남성 캐릭터를 대상으로, 고바야시 시게오(1991)가 제안한 이미지 스케일 이론과 Brannon과 Pleck(1976)이 제시한 남성 규범 4원칙을 분석 틀로 삼아 연구를 수행하였다. 여섯 편의 대표적 중국 오토메 게임에 등장하는 26명의 남성 캐릭터를 대상으로 색채 추출 및 사분면 분류를 실시하고, 직업 설정을 결합하여 성격 어 휘군을 구축한 뒤, 전통적 남성성 부합 정도를 평가하였다. 연구 결과, 시각적 색채 사분면, 성격 특성, 직업 정체성, 플 레이어 감정 인식 간에 뚜렷한 연관성이 나타났으며, 남성성 규범 부합성은 ‘기본적 전통성 유지 + 부드러움과 민감성 통합’이라는 복합적 경향을 보였다. 본 연구는 현재 여성향 가상 연애 콘텐츠가 전통 성별 규범을 재구성하는 동시에, 여 성 주체적 위치을 확장하는 이중적 특성을 지니고 있음을 밝히고자 한다.
