[Purpose] This study examines the critical role of the Seoul Olympics in the democratization process of South Korea during the political upheaval of the 1980s. Specifically, it analyzes the political context surrounding the Olympic Games and the intentions of the Chun Doo-hwan regime to determine how the event influenced South Korea’s democratic transition. [Method] A qualitative research method was employed, focusing on the analysis of relevant literature, news reports, and historical records. The study investigates how the Chun regime maintained power through military repression and how the hosting of the Seoul Olympics acted as a source of both domestic and international political pressure. [Results] The Chun Doo-hwan regime attempted to use the Olympics to improve its international standing and address economic difficulties. However, the event became a catalyst that intensified demands for democratization. The combination of growing international attention and widespread domestic protests forced the regime to gradually accept the calls for reform, ultimately paving the way for the June 29 Declaration of Democratization in 1987. [Conclusion] While the Seoul Olympics were initially pursued as part of the Chun regime’s strategy to secure political legitimacy and economic stability, the Games ultimately functioned as a crucial catalyst for democratization in South Korea. The successful hosting of the Olympics facilitated both international pressure and the domestic momentum for political reform, serving as a pivotal moment in the nation’s transition from military dictatorship to democracy.

[목적] 본 연구는 1980년대 한국의 정치적 격변 속에서 서울올림픽이 민주화 과정에서 수행한 핵심적 역할을 규명하는 데 목적을 두었다. 특히 올림픽 개최의 정치적 배경과 전두환 정권의 의도를 분석하여, 서울올림픽이 한국 민주화에 미친 영향을 밝히고자 하였다. [방법] 본 연구는 관련 문헌, 뉴스 보도, 역사적 사건을 중심으로 한 문헌고찰법을 활용하였 다. 전두환 정권이 군사적 억압을 통해 권력을 유지하는 과정과, 서울올림픽 개최가 국내외 정치적 압력으로 작용하게 된 경위를 분석하였다. [결과] 전두환 정권은 서울올림픽을 국제적 이미지 개선 및 경제 위기 극복의 수단으로 활용하고자 하였으나, 결과적으로 민주화 요구를 더욱 증폭시키는 계기가 되었다. 국제사회의 관심과 국민적 항의가 맞물리면서, 정권은 점진적으로 민주화 요구를 수용할 수밖에 없었고, 그 결과 1987년 6월 민주화 선언이 이루어지는 기반이 마련되었 다. [결론] 서울올림픽 개최는 전두환 정권의 정치적·경제적 안정 도모에서 비롯되었으나, 결과적으로 한국 민주화의 결정적 촉진제로 작용하였다. 올림픽의 성공적 개최는 국제적 압력과 정치 개혁의 여건을 조성하는 계기가 되었으며, 군사 독재에서 민주화로의 이행을 가능하게 한 중요한 전환점으로 평가된다.
