Sudeoksa Temple, an important Buddhist temple in Chungcheong Province since the Baekje Dynasty, rarely appears in historical records from the Joseon Dynasty. Nevertheless, Sudeoksa is the most representative Buddhist temple in South Chungcheong Province. This is not a logical explanation for the interest in cultural assets. Therefore, it is important to examine the nature and transmission of traditional Korean culture through Sudeoksa. Since its founding during the Baekje Dynasty, Sudeoksa Temple has housed many important elements of Buddhist cultural heritage and has contributed to the development of Buddhism. A key turning point occurred during the Japanese colonial period, when the temple became the base for Master Man Gong’s movement to promote Zen Buddhism. Man Gong-sa’s campaign for the promotion of Zen Buddhism illustrates the history of Sudeoksa Temple and the nature of Buddhist culture during the Japanese occupation. Buddhist culture has its own history as an important part of traditional Korean culture. In particular, Sudeoksa Temple has played a role in the transmission of traditional Korean culture throughout the ages.
