This study investigates social anxiety in different cultural contexts by examining the mediating role of the devaluation of positive social outcomes in the relationship between fear of positive/negative evaluation and social anxiety. The research includes 1,087 adults: 609 Koreans, 166 Asian Americans, and 312 European Americans. The results showed that social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation, and the devaluation of positive social outcomes were highest among European Americans. Fear of positive/negative evaluation and devaluation of positive social outcomes were significantly related to social anxiety for all groups. However, the correlation between fear of positive evaluation and fear of negative evaluation was not significant for East Asian Americans. The pathway from fear of positive/negative evaluation to social anxiety via the devaluation of positive social outcomes was significant for all groups. These findings highlight the importance of cultural context in understanding social anxiety, suggesting the need for culturally tailored assessments and treatments.

사회불안에 영향을 주는 변인은 문화적 맥락에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 본 연구는 한국인, 동아 시아계 미국인, 유럽계 미국인을 중심으로 긍정적/부정적 평가에 대한 두려움이 긍정적인 사 회적 결과에 대한 평가절하를 통해 사회불안을 예측하는 경로를 검증하고자 하였다. 만 18세 이상 성인에 해당하는 한국인 609명, 아시아계 미국인 166명, 유럽계 미국인 312명의 자료를 바탕으로 경로분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유럽계 미국인 집단에서 사회불안, 긍정적/부정적 평가에 대한 두려움, 긍정적인 사회적 결과에 대한 평가절하가 가장 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 한국인, 유럽계 미국인 집단에서는 사회불안과 긍정적/부정적 평가에 대 한 두려움, 긍정적인 사회적 결과에 대한 평가절하는 모두 통계적으로 유의한 정적 상관을 보였다. 동아시아계 미국인 집단에서도 사회불안과 각 관련 요인 간의 정적 상관은 확인되었 지만, 긍정적 평가에 대한 두려움과 부정적 평가에 대한 두려움 사이의 상관관계는 유의하지 않았다. 셋째, 모든 문화 집단에서 긍정적/부정적 평가에 대한 두려움이 긍정적인 사회적 결 과에 대한 평가절하를 통해 사회불안으로 연결되는 경로가 유의하게 나타났다. 본 연구는 사 회불안의 문화적 이해를 확장했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
