Kang Baek-nyeon(姜栢年, 1603–1681) was a civil official during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. Beginning his public service at the age of 24, he served in various posts for 55 years under four kings from Injo to Sukjong. He was recognized as an incorrupt and upright official, and also as a distinguished writer who authored many important state documents. Although Kang Baek-nyeon has been introduced as one of the “Eight Literary Masters of Small Northerner Faction”(小北八文章), in-depth literary research on the various styles of his writings has not been conducted. This study focuses on his elegy poems(挽詩), which comprise 550 poems and represent a significant portion of his 1,605 extant Chinese poems. First, this study provides an overview of the formal and thematic characteristics of Kang Baek-nyeon's elegy poems. The thematic aspects are analyzed in three categories: ⅰ) Commendation of the deceased’s achievements and literary talent; ⅱ) Emphasis on moral virtues such as loyalty, filial piety, and fidelity; ⅲ) Expression of emotional bonds, sorrow, and mourning Seolbong(雪峯: Kang’s pen name) objectively expressed admiration for the deceased’s achievements and career, including both the smooth and difficult aspects of their official lives, and lamented the underutilization of talented individuals. His elegies often highlighted the moral virtues of the deceased and their families, expressing a hope that their virtue would be remembered by future generations. In poems dedicated to close friends or acquaintances, Seolbong conveyed profound emotional bonds, articulating personal grief and offering comfort. He also moved beyond the conventional regulated verse(律詩) form of elegy poems, writing long-form pieces that deeply expressed personal sentiments and the pain of loss. These works demonstrate a balance between public mourning and private remembrance. Moreover, they show a clear contrast in narrative structure and emotional tone depending on whether the deceased died young or lived a long life. Seolbong’s elegies hold significant literary value in that they follow the classical model of elegies—honoring the deceased's achievements, reflecting on their life, and preserving their memory and the lessons of their life for the living. Further study of Kang Baek-nyeon is needed not only in the fields of ritual studies, thought, and political history but also in literature. Of the 30 volumes (in 8 books) of his extensive collected works, ‘Seolbong Yugo(雪峯遺稿)’, 21 volumes are dedicated to Chinese poetry. His diverse body of official documents and prose writings clearly illustrate his role as one of the foremost writers of his time. This study anticipates further refined research in this area.

姜栢年(1603-1681)은 조선 중기의 문신으로, 24세부터 55년간의 관직생활 동안 여러 직책을 겸하여 인조부터 숙종까지 네 임금을 모셨다. 청렴결백한 관료로 평가 받음과 동시에 뛰어난 문장가로 여러 중요한 국가 문서를 작 성하였다. 강백년에 대한 문학 연구는 小北八文章의 일원으로 일부 소개가 되었을 뿐 아직까지 각 문체에 대한 면밀한 문학 연구는 미흡하다. 이에 본 고는 강백년 한시 1605제 중 550제의 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 挽詩에 대해 고찰하였다. 우선 강백년의 만시 전체 작품에 대해 형식과 주제에 따라 개괄 분석하 였다. 이를 주제 양상에 따라 “1. 망자의 功績과 가문의 명예 稱揚2. 忠孝 烈의 도덕적 덕목 강조 3. 정서적 유대의 슬픔과 애도의 표현”으로 나누어 내용을 분석하였다. 설봉은 故人의 공적과 관직 생활의 순탄함과 역경에 대 해 서술하고 인재로서의 用不用에 대한 안타까움을 객관적으로 표출하였 다. 특히 망자와 망자의 가족이 실천했던 忠孝烈에 대한 도덕적 덕목을 강 조하는 내용을 포함하고 있으며 이에 대한 덕망은 후대에도 영원하길 바라 는 기원의 의미를 표현하였다. 설봉은 친분이 두텁거나 가까웠던 고인을 대 상으로 한 만시 작품에서는 정서적 유대관계의 특별한 정감을 표출하여 사 적인 슬픔과 위로의 마음을 핍진하게 드러내었다. 이를 통해 설봉 만시는 공적 애도와 사적 추모의 균형미를 가지고 있음 을 알 수 있으며, 아울러 망자의 요절과 장수에 대한 서사적 구조와 감정적 호소가 확연히 차별되는 점을 포착할 수 있다. 설봉의 만시 작품은 고인의 업적을 기리고 그의 생평을 되돌아보며 남은 이에게 고인의 삶이 주는 교 훈과 그에 대한 기억을 보존케 하려는 전통적인 만시의 전범을 보여준다는 점에서 특별한 문학적 가치가 있다.
