This study explores the life and poetic world of Ujeong Kim Geuk-seong. Chapter 2 examines his biography, particularly through the framework of munmu-gyeomjeon(文武兼全)—the balanced cultivation of both literary and martial virtues—as well as his unwavering commitment to moral principles. Inheriting literary talent, martial prowess, and a strong scholarly tradition from his forebears, Kim held a variety of civil and military posts across both central and provincial administrations. Throughout his career, he consistently upheld his personal convictions, embodying a life marked by integrity and principle. Chapter 3 turns to the bureaucratic dimensions of Kim’s poetic expression. For nearly four decades, he served as a high-ranking official, alternating between central and regional appointments and between civil and military roles. His poetry serves as a meaningful lens through which his political values and inner ethos may be observed. This study approaches his poetic world from two perspectives: first, his pride in embodying munmu-gyeomjeon and his political aspiration to attain the rank of Daesin(Grand Minister); and second, the articulation of a bureaucratic ethos befitting such a role. The former reveals how his exceptional talents fostered a profound sense of professional identity, fueling his ambition to serve at the highest levels of governance. The latter considers the range of official sensibilities expressed in his poetry—realistic political insight, frustration from unrealized aspirations, and a deep awareness of life’s impermanence—qualities common among scholar-officials of his time. Yet what distinguishes Kim are three particular dimensions of his thought: his compassion for the people rooted in the primacy of moral principles (大體), his fervent loyalty (忠情) to the monarch, and his dedication to the Confucian ideal of seonu-hurak (先憂後樂)—bearing hardship before enjoying personal ease.

본고는 우정 김극성의 삶과 시세계를 살펴보는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 김극성의 생애를 ‘文武兼全’의 능력과 삶의 태도의 측면에 서 살펴보았다. 김극성은 선대 조상들의 文才와 武才및 家學을 통해서 형성된 ‘文武兼全’의 능력을 지니고서 문관직, 무관직, 외직, 내직 등을 두 루 역임하였다. 그러한 과정에서 김극성은 자신의 所信을 잃지 않고 절조를 지키는 삶의 태도를 견지하였다. 3장에서는 김극성의 관료적 시세계를 살펴보았다. 김극성은 약 40년간 내직과 외직, 문관직과 무관직을 넘나들면서 철저한 관료로서 삶을 살았 다고 할 수 있었다. 따라서 김극성 시세계는 그의 관료의식의 특징적인 국면을 포착하는 일이라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 이를 ‘文武兼全에 대한 자 부심과 大臣에의 抱負’, ‘大臣으로서 官僚意識의 表出’로 파악하였다. 전자는, 김극성이 뛰어난 文才와 文才로 인해 관직생활에서 ‘文武兼全’에 대한 자부심을 표출한 것이다. 김극성은 이를 바탕으로 大臣이 되고자 하는 정 치적 포부를 드러내고 있었다. 후자는 김극성이 관직생활 중에 드러내는 특징적인 의식들을 살펴보았다. 김극성은 여느 관료들과 마찬가지로 현실 인식, 회재불우, 인생의 무상함 등 다양한 의식들을 드러내고 있었다. 하지만 김극성이 大臣으로서 드러내는 특징적인 관료의식은 ‘大體를 중시하 는 애민의식’, ‘강렬한 忠情’, ‘先憂後樂의 자세’를 꼽을 수 있었다.
