This thesis is This review examines the scholarly significance and contributions of the Collected Commentaries and Interpretations on Zhang Zai’s Western Inscription and Eastern Inscription (張載<西銘><東銘>詮評彙纂), compiled by Professor Bailu Wei (魏柏麓). The volume systematically compiles interpretive texts from 398 scholars across China, Korea, and Japan, covering the period from the Song dynasty through the early 20th century. As Zhang Zai’s seminal works, the Western Inscription and Eastern Inscription - collectively known as the ‘Two Inscriptions’ - are central to understanding the intellectual core of Neo-Confucianism and East Asian Confucian thought. This monumental compilation, totaling 638,000 characters, offers the most comprehensive collection to date, encompassing various historical interpretations, commentaries, and critical reflections. Organized in six volumes, the work includes corrected base texts, thematic discussions, annotated commentaries, and historical evaluations. It applies rigorous textual collation and editorial practices to enhance accuracy and accessibility. Notably, it integrates Korean and Japanese classical Chinese interpretations, extending its scope beyond China to encompass the broader East Asian Confucian sphere. The appendices provide bibliographic metadata, scholar profiles, and a chronological index of modern research (1949–2023), enhancing its value for future scholarship. While some limitations remain, such as the exclusion of vernacular Korean and Japanese sources and occasional citation errors, the work nonetheless lays a foundational groundwork for ongoing research in Zhang Zai studies and Neo-Confucian textual history across East Asia.

이 글은 魏柏麓 교수가 편찬한 『張載<西銘><東銘>詮評彙纂』의 학술적 의의와 기여를 평가하는 評論이다. 魏 교수의 저작은 張載의 대표적 저작인 <西銘>과 <東銘>에 대한 동 아시아 3국 학자들의 해석과 평론 문헌을 포괄적이고 체계적으로 집대성한 방대한 자료집 으로서, 중국 宋代부터 중화민국에 이르기까지, 그리고 한국의 조선시대와 일본의 도쿠가 와 막부 시기까지 총 398명의 학자, 493부의 관련 문헌을 수록하고 있다. 이 책은 定本 校正, 統論, 條文別 주석 및 평론 등 총 6권의 체계적 편제를 통해 ‘二銘’ 즉 <서명>과 <동 명>의 전승과 해석의 역사적 흐름을 명확히 보여주며, 각 문헌에 대한 校勘과 편집자 주석 을 통해 자료의 정확성과 활용도를 제고하였다. 특히 한국과 일본의 한문 해석 자료를 포 함시킴으로써 동아시아 3국의 신유학 전통 속에서 장재 사상의 수용과 영향력을 총체적으 로 조망할 수 있도록 하였다. 부록에서는 문헌의 판본 내역, 학자 정보, 현대의 연구성과 목록 등을 제공하여 향후 연구의 기반을 제공하였다. 아쉬운 점은 편찬자의 언어적 한계로 인해 일부 문헌의 인용 오류, 표기 미비, 한국어 및 일본어 해석 문헌의 누락 등 보완이 필 요한 지점도 존재한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 책은 장재 사상과 동아시아 신유학 연구의 문헌적 기반을 강화하는 데 있어 중요한 전기를 마련한 업적으로 평가된다.
