This study investigates the transmission and transformation of Miryang Arirang through the lens of musical ecology. Originating from regional folklore and shamanistic traditions, Miryang Arirang evolved into a symbol of national resistance as it was adapted into independence and liberation songs during the Japanese colonial era. In the postcolonial period, the song underwent further genre diversification—including popular song, choral music, and military march—via developments in the recording industry and mass media. This paper analyzes the dynamic interaction among musical agents such as performers, composers, mediating institutions, audiences, and performance platforms, which together constitute a complex musical ecosystem. While the song retains its fundamental identity grounded in the menaritori modal system, it demonstrates significant performative variation in tonal structure, ornamental technique, and melodic contour, shaped by each performer’s interpretive agency. These aspects underscore its capacity for hybridity and cultural adaptability. Miryang Arirang serves as a paradigmatic example of how traditional Korean folk music can be sustained and reinvented in modern socio-cultural contexts. This study offers musicological insights into the mechanisms through which folk traditions are preserved, transmitted, and transformed within contemporary musical and cultural frameworks.

본 연구는 <밀양아리랑>의 전승과 변용 과정을 ‘음악적 생태계’라는 관점에서 고찰한 것이다. <밀양아리랑>은 민간신앙과 지역 설화에 기반한 민요로 출발하여, 일제강점기에는 독립군가와 광복군가로 개사되었 고, 이후 음반 산업과 방송 매체를 통해 대중가요, 합창곡, 군악대 행진곡 등 다양한 장르로 확장되면서 시대적 변화에 적응해 왔다. 이러한 변용 과정에서 민요의 생산자, 유통자, 수용자, 플랫폼 등이 유기적으로 상호작용하며 복합적이 고 역동적인 음악 생태계를 구성하였다. <밀양아리랑>은 메나리토리를 기반으로 하는 음악적 특성을 유지 하면서도, 연행 주체의 해석과 표현에 따라 음계, 시김새, 선율구조 등에서 변용과 혼종성을 나타낸다. 이는 전통 민요가 고정된 형식이 아닌, 시대와 문화 환경에 따라 유연하게 진화하는 살아 있는 문화적 유기체임을 시사한다. 결론적으로 <밀양아리랑>은 민요의 대중성과 지속가능성을 보여주는 대표적 사례로, 전통의 현대적 계승과 문화유산의 창조적 전환을 이해하는데 중요한 통찰을 제공한다.
