The term Jeongak encompasses a range of meanings and interpretations, making its use as a definitive category somewhat problematic. Court music during the Joseon Dynasty was transmitted primarily through the Jangakwon, while music handed down outside the court— particularly in pungnyubang —has often been classified as folk music for the sake of convenience. However, an anomalous classification has emerged in which both court and pungnyubang music are grouped under Jeongak, while other civilian music is categorized as minsok eumak, the traditional folk music. This has led to inconsistencies that continue to affect how traditional Korean music is categorized today. Despite such issues, the term Jeongak is widely used and functions effectively as a communicative tool among practitioners. In light of this, there is a need to clarify and systematize its usage to support music education and scholarly discourse. This paper examines the contemporary usage of Jeongak through practical examples and finds that, among Korean traditional music specialists, the term aligns closely with the repertoire performed by the Jeongakdan (Classical Music Orchestra) of the National Gugak Center. This study thus reassesses the appropriateness of Jeongak as a pedagogical and field-relevant term in the classification of Korean traditional music.

‘정악(正樂)’이라는 용어는 그 정의와 해석에 있어 다양성이 존재하여 사용에 신중을 기할 필요가 있다. 조선시대 궁중음악은 장악원을 중심으로 전승되었으며, 궁 밖의 풍류방에서 이어진 음악을 민간음악으로 분류하는 것은 분류상의 편의를 위한 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 그러나 오늘날 궁중음악과 풍류방음악을 함께 ‘정악’으로 묶고, 나머지 민간음악을 ‘민속음악’으로 분류하는 이분법적 구분은 다소 기형적인 양상을 띠며, 현재 우리 전통음악 분류 체계의 기준 중 하나로 작용하고 있다는 점에서 비판적 검토가 요구된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘정악’이라는 용어는 실무 현장에서 광범위하게 사용되고 있으며, 국악인들 간의 의사소통에서도 큰 혼란 없이 통용되고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 이러한 현실적 용어 사용을 교육적 맥락에서 활용하기 위해서는, 보다 명확한 구분 기준을 정비하고 체계화할 필요가 있다. 본고는 일상에서의 예시를 통해 ‘정악’이라는 용어가 실제로 어떠한 의미로 상용되고 있는지를 고찰하였 으며, 국악 전공자 간의 인식 중에 ‘정악’은 국립국악원 정악단이 연주하는 음악과 그 의미가 정확히 일치함 을 확인하였다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 교육 현장에서의 실용성과 소통 가능성을 중시하는 관점에서, ‘정악’을 갈래 분류용어로서 수용하고 활용하는 방안을 재검토하고자 하였다.
