This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ratings on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in China’s pollution-intensive industries, highlighting the significance of sustainable development amid economic growth and environmental challenges. Using panel data from A-share listed companies from 2012 to 2022, the study examines the direct effects of ESG ratings on TFP while exploring the mediating roles of financial constraints (FC) and research and development (R&D). Furthermore, it assesses the moderating effect of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in strengthening the ESG-TFP relationship. To facilitate comparative analysis under institutional diversity, the study incorporates case studies from South Korea, a country that has made notable progress in ESG practices under a different governance and regulatory environment. The findings of empirical test reveal a significant positive relationship between ESG ratings and TFP, with SOEs exhibiting stronger effects due to institutional advantages and policy alignment. Financial constraints and R&D are identified as key mediators, illustrating the mechanisms through which ESG initiatives enhance productivity. This research contributes to the literature by integrating ESG and productivity analyses within pollution-intensive industries, offering novel insights into the role of SOEs in driving green transformation and sustainable development. The results also provide practical implications for policymakers and industry stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of ESG-driven strategies to promote high-quality economic growth in Korea and China.

본 연구는 중국의 오염심화 산업을 대상으로 환경(E), 사회(S), 지배구조(G) 요소로 구성된 ESG 등급이 총요소생산성(TFP)에 미치 는 영향을 실증적으로 분석했으며, 일부 한국 기업의 사례도 제시했다. 중국의 경우, 급속한 경제성장과 환경 문제라는 이중 도전에 직면한 상황에서 지속가능한 발전의 중요성이 부각되는 가운데, 본 연구는 2012년부터 2022년까지의 A주 상장기업 패널 데이터를 활용하여 ESG 등급이 TFP에 미치는 직접적인 영향을 분석하고, 재무적 제약(Financial Constraints, FC) 및 연구개발(R&D)의 매개 효과를 함께 고찰했다. 나아가 국유기업(SOE)이 ESG-TFP 관계를 강화하는 조절변수로서 어떠한 역할을 수행하는지도 고찰했다. 분석 결과, ESG 등급과 TFP 간에는 유의미한 정(+)의 관계가 존재했으며, 국유기업의 경우 제도적 우위 및 정책 정합성으로 인해 그 효과가 더욱 강하게 나타났다. 또한, 재무적 제약(FC)과 연구개발(R&D)은 ESG가 생산성에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 주요 매개 경 로임이 확인되었다. 본 연구는 ESG와 생산성 간의 연계를 중국의 오염집약 산업이라는 특수한 맥락에서 통합적으로 실증분석하였다. 나아가 한국의 몇 개 중요한 기업의 ESG 관련 사례 분석을 통해 중국과 유사한 문화이지만, 다소 차별화된 성과를 고찰하였다. 끝으 로 본 연구는 관련된 학문적·실무적·정책적 실무적 중요한 시사점을 제시하였다. 특히, 중국 국유기업이 녹색 전환 및 지속가능한 발 전을 선도하는 데 있어 중요한 역할을 수행할 수 있음을 제시하였다. 또한, 한국 및 중국의 정책 입안자와 산업 관련 이해관계자들에 게는 ESG 기반 전략이 기업의 지속가능한 발전을 촉진하는 데 있어 핵심임을 시사하고 있다.
