This study aims to restore the genealogy of the contents of Chunhyangjeon produced and staged in the Japanese performing arts scene during the 20th century and to empirically analyze their modes of transformation. Based on diverse visual materials such as performance pamphlets, newspaper advertisements, and scripts, this study systematically traces the processes through which the narrative of Chunhyangjeon was received and reinterpreted within Japanese performing arts by comprehensively collecting and analyzing performance records and information on creative agents. By uncovering and organizing previously unexamined material, this study clarifies how this foreign classic was transformed according to the changing sensibilities and cultural desires of Japanese society. Chapter 2 chronologically organizes major performances from 1938 to 1999 and analyzes stage structures, scene compositions, and other performative elements to reconstruct the developmental trajectory of performance styles. It reveals that changes in stage forms were not merely formal variations but were closely interlinked with shifts in each era’s aesthetic sensibilities and emotional codes. Chapter 3 provides an integrated analysis of the transformation of Chunhyangjeon content across various theatrical genres, including shingeki (modern drama), shinpa operas, operas, straight plays, musicals, and musical dramas. It traces the evolution of stage formats and examines the representational strategies employed by key creative agents—directors, scriptwriters, and actors—through genealogical research. This chapter investigates how the characters, Chunhyang and Mongryong, were emotionally represented and aesthetically transformed in each era, focusing on the main actors’ gender, age, physical characteristics, and modes of emotional expression. This analysis reveals how the figures were continuously reinterpreted within the framework of Japanese sensibilities and cultural values. The results demonstrate that Chunhyangjeon was not merely transplanted as a classic but was reborn as complex cultural content within the Japanese performing arts. Furthermore, the study proposes the potential of genealogical restoration as a methodology bridging performance history and cultural content studies. The study suggests that future research should expand into detailed analyses of individual works based on available scripts and records as well as comparative cultural studies on the transformation of East Asian classical narratives in Japan.

본 연구는 20세기 일본 공연계에서 기획ㆍ제작된 ‘춘향전 콘텐츠’의 계보를 복원하고, 그 변용 양상을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 공연 팸플릿, 신문 광고, 대본 등 다양한 시각 자료를 바탕으로, 공연 기록과 창작 주체 정보를 종합하여 『춘향전』 서사의 수용과 재구성 과정을 체계적으로 추적하였다. 특히 기존 연구에서 다루지 않은 자료를 발굴하고 계보화함으로써, 외래 고전이 일본 공연계 내부에서 시대적 감성과 문화적 욕망에 따라 변형되는 양상을 구체적으로 규명하였다. 2장에서는 1938년부터 1999년까지 시대별 주요 공연 사례를 연대기적으로 정리하고, 막ㆍ장 구성, 무대 형식 등의 방식을 분석하여 공연 양식의 변천 과정을 계보적으로 복원하였다. 공연 양식의 변화가 단순한 형식적 차이를 넘어, 각 시대 공연 미학과 감성 코드의 변동과 밀접하게 연동되었음을 밝혔다. 3장에서는 신극, 신파가극, 오페라, 연극, 뮤지컬, 음악극 등 다양한 장르를 중 심으로 ‘춘향전 콘텐츠’의 무대 형식 변용 양상을 통합적으로 분석하고, 연출가․ 각본가․배우 등 창작 주체의 계보를 바탕으로 재현 전략의 변화를 고찰하였다. 특히 주연배우들의 표현 방식 등을 중심으로, 춘향과 몽룡이라는 인물이 시대별 공연에서 어떻게 감성적으로 재현되고 일본적 감수성 속에서 변용되었는지를 입 체적으로 규명하였다. 본 연구는 『춘향전』이 일본 공연계에서 단순한 고전 수용을 넘어 복합적 문화 콘텐츠로 재탄생했음을 입증하고, 공연사와 문화콘텐츠 연구를 아우르는 계보 복 원형 방법론의 가능성을 제시하였다. 또한 이미 확인된 대본과 기록을 바탕으로 한 개별 작품 심층 분석과, 다양한 동아시아 고전 서사의 일본 내 변용 양상에 대한 비교문화적 연구로의 확장 가능성을 열었다.
