Sookmyung Women's University Library holds approximately 1.3 million books, among which approximately 10,000 are old books (古書). However, thus far, the library has not appointed a librarian specializing in old books, and, consequently, has not published a dedicated catalog for these materials. The total number of old books that can be identified through the library’s website differs from the number in files managed by the library staff, making it difficult to determine the exact number. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to establish the accurate total by using the number recorded in the staff-managed files as a baseline, supplemented by a physical survey and a reexamination of what would constitute an old book. Once this groundwork has been done, further bibliographic and content analyses of each confirmed old book will help reveal the full scope and value of the library’s collection. As a comprehensive catalog of old books has not been compiled, the Sookmyung collection has remained largely unnoticed by both the general public and specialist researchers. Although a limited selection of these books has been displayed externally—such as during the old book exhibitions in 1961 and 1988 and the museum donation exhibition in 2009—only some 700 books were introduced at these three events. However, the descriptions provided were sometimes inaccurate, failing to offer precise information for researchers. Despite these challenges, it is encouraging that some researchers have recently begun to study parts of the collection. If a comprehensive survey and organization of the entire old book collection is completed, it is expected that a broader and more diverse range of research would follow thereon.

숙명여자대학교 도서관에는 약 130만 책 정도의 책이 소장되어 있고, 이 가운 데 고서(古書)는 1만 책 정도를 차지한다. 그러나 숙명여대 도서관에서는 아직까 지 고서를 전문적으로 담당하는 사서를 두지 못했고, 그 결과로 고서 목록을 발행 하지 못했다. 도서관 홈페이지를 통해 어렵게 파악할 수 있는 고서의 총량은 실제 도서관 사서들이 관리하고 있는 파일에 나타난 고서의 총량과 차이를 보이고 있기 때문에, 현재 숙명여대 소장 고서의 정확한 총량은 파악하기 어려운 실정이다. 도 서관 사서들이 관리하는 파일에 나타난 고서의 총량을 기본으로 하고, 고서에 대 한 실물조사 및 고서의 범위에 대한 재고찰 등을 실시하여 정확한 고서의 총량을 파악하는 것이 시급히 요청된다고 하겠다. 이를 바탕으로 확정된 개별 고서에 대 한 형식적 서지와 내용적 파악 작업을 추가한다면, 숙명여대 소장 고서의 전모와 가치가 드러나게 될 것으로 생각된다. 고서의 목록도 만들어지지 못했기 때문에 일반인은 물론 전문 연구자들에게도 숙명여대 소장 고서는 주목을 받지 못하고 있다. 숙명여대 소장 고서에 대해서는 지금까지 제한적으로 일부의 책들이 외부로 노출된 적이 있기는 하다. 1961년 고 서 전시회, 1988년 고서 전시회, 2009년 박물관 유물 기증전을 통해서, 일부 고 서의 원본이 전시되기도 했고, 소장 고서의 일부가 목록으로 공개되기도 했다. 그 러나 이 세 차례의 전시회와 기증전에서 소개된 책의 수량은 모두 합쳐 700여 책 에 불과했고, 각 고서에 대한 설명에도 오류가 있어 정확한 정보를 연구자들에게 제공하지 못했다. 이러한 악조건 속에서도 다행히 최근 숙명여대 소장 고서 중 일 부의 책들을 대상으로 연구하는 연구자가 나타나고 있는데, 소장 고서 전체에 대한 파악과 정리가 이루어진다면 훨씬 다양하고 많은 연구가 이어질 수 있을 것으 로 예상된다.
