This qualitative study employs a narrative inquiry approach to explore the psychosocial experiences of Korean men who migrated to the Philippines, entered into international marriages with local women, and formed multicultural families while retaining their Korean citizenship. Previous research on international marriage and multicultural families has primarily focused on marriage migrant women residing in Korea and their children, while the experiences of Korean men who have settled abroad remain underexplored. Addressing this research gap from a counseling and educational perspective, this study closely examines the life of a Korean man who has lived in the Philippines for approximately 30 years and has established a multicultural family. Guided by the narrative inquiry methodology proposed by Clandinin and Connelly (2000), the study interprets the participant’s lived experiences and the contextual meanings of his life. Data was collected in the Philippines through a combination of in-depth interviews, field notes, photographs, and personal documents, allowing for a comprehensive construction and interpretation of the participant’s life story. Findings reveal that the participant actively embraced the local language and culture, striving for linguistic and cultural integration, and adopted business ownership as a strategic response to local legal constraints. He developed a complex, multilayered identity through processes such as building family relationships, raising dual-nationality children, and maintaining his cultural identity within a multicultural environment. These experiences were closely intertwined with his survival strategies and the construction of meaning in his life. The study offers foundational insights for a deeper understanding of Korean male migrants in multicultural families and provides practical implications for enhancing cultural sensitivity and empathetic understanding in counseling settings. By illuminating the complex realities of life shaped through international marriage, the findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of migrant male identity and life strategies, thereby expanding the practical scope of multicultural counseling and education.

본 연구는 필리핀으로 이주하여 현지 여성과 국제결혼을 맺고, 한국 국적을 유 지한 채 다문화가정을 이루며 살아가는 한인남성의 심리·사회적 경험을 내러티브 탐구 방법으로 조명한 질적연구이다. 지금까지의 국제결혼 및 다문화가정 관련 연구는 주로 한국에 거주하는 결혼이주여성과 그 자녀를 중심으로 이루어져 왔으 며, 해외에 정착한 한인남성의 삶과 경험은 상대적으로 주목받지 못하였다. 이에 본 연구는 30년간 필리핀에 거주하며 다문화가정을 이루어온 한 한인남성 의 삶을 상담 및 교육학적 관점에서 심층적으로 분석하였다. 연구는 Clandinin과 Connelly(2000)의 내러티브 탐구 방법론에 따라 수행되었으며, 참여자의 삶의 맥락 과 경험의 의미를 탐색하였다. 자료 수집은 필리핀 현지에서 진행되었으며, 심층 면담, 현장 노트, 사진, 참여자의 개인 기록물 등을 종합적으로 활용하여 삶의 이야 기를 구성하고 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자는 필리핀의 언어와 문화를 적극적으로 수용하며 언어적·문화 적 통합을 시도하였고, 현지의 법적 제약을 극복하기 위한 전략으로 사업 운영을 선택하였다. 또한 가족 내 관계 형성, 복수국적 자녀의 양육, 다문화적 환경 속에서 의 정체성 유지 등을 통해 복합적이고 다층적인 정체성을 형성하였으며, 이는 그 의 생존 전략 및 삶의 의미 구성과 밀접하게 연결되어 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 다문화가정을 이루고 살아가는 한인남성 이주자의 삶을 깊 이 이해하는 데 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있으며, 상담 현장에서 문화적 민감성과 공감적 이해를 증진하는 데 실질적인 시사점을 제공한다. 특히, 국제결혼을 통 해 형성된 복합적 삶의 양상을 내러티브 탐구를 통해 조명함으로써 상담자와 교육 자가 이주 남성의 정체성과 삶의 전략을 보다 정교하게 이해하고, 다문화 상담 및 교육의 실천적 지평을 확장하는 데 기여할 수 있다.
