This paper examines the play Gulliver(s) 1 and 2 through the lens of the “crisis of narrative.” The play appropriates the motif of “travel” from Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, but sets it within a hyperconnected and surveilled contemporary society where such a journey is no longer possible. In the original, Gulliver is a “traveling subject” who constructs meaning through encounters and storytelling. However, in Gulliver(s), the Gullivers are immobilized, caught in repetitive routines, and unable to gather or narrate meaningful experiences. Focusing on the script rather than performance or direction, this study analyzes Part 1 as a depiction of stories that cannot begin and Part 2 as stories that fail to conclude. The crisis of narrative portrayed here reveals more than a lack of story; it reflects a deeper disruption in the human capacity to understand oneself and relate to others. The inability to narrate translates into the loss of self-interpretation and broken relationality. Nonetheless, the play opens the possibility of renewed narrative through nonverbal gestures—such as lullabies, cello rhythms, and acts of remembrance—offering subtle ways of reclaiming storytelling within a fractured world.
