A Case Study on Couple Therapy for Husband Recovering from Alcohol Addiction

This study aims to find the results of couple therapy for husband, who is recovering from alcohol addiction. The medical doctor diagnosed the husband’s disease as a cirrhosis of the liver 10 years ago. He had been abstaining from alcohol for 3 years, and took classes relating to alcohol addiction for 7 months from medical doctor. He did not have sexual intercourse with his wife for 3 years and masturbated watching pornography in the computer. Wife had always been caring her husband not to drink, and she had codepended with her husband in the result.The researcher as a therapist had treated this couple for 27 sessions from February, 2001 to January, 2002 with individual and couple therapies. The researchers used grounded theory approach to analyze the results of the counseling and executed process analysis. The researchers found the 5 stages relating to couple therapy for a husband abstaining alcohol by the process analysis: a stage of problem confirmation, a stage of treatment and change need, a stage of effort for change, a stage of freedom from codependence, a stage of recovery. On the other hand, the researchers applied Miles and Huberman’s(1994) Time-Ordered Meta Matrix to show the effects of the treatment relating to three common problems(alcoholsexual problems, communication problem, and codependence problem).
