The yanggeum, a hammered dulcimer with roots in ancient Mesopotamia, has spread widely across Asia, Europe, and the English-speaking world. With its multicultural background, it serves as an effective resource in music education. This study developed teaching strategies using the yanggeum in performance, listening, and composition, and examined their effectiveness through focus group interviews (FGIs). Its global dissemination fosters cultural relativism and empathy through exposure to diverse musical traditions. Incorporating virtual instrument applications can also enhance students’ digital literacy and creative expression. Composition activities using Korean and Chinese tonal systems promote understanding of non-Western music, encouraging a balanced perspective and global identity. Overall, the study confirms the pedagogical value of yanggeum-based multicultural music education.

양금은 그 기원이 고대 메소포타미아 지역의 고형 해머드 덜시머로 이는 동ㆍ서양으로 전파되어 현재 아시아, 유럽, 영미권 등 다양한 나라에서 폭넓게 연주되고 있는 악기로, 다양한 문화적 배경을 지니고 있기 때문에 다문화 음악 교육에서 효과적으로 활용될 수 있는 제재이다. 이에 본 연구에서 는 양금을 제재로 연주, 감상, 창작 영역으로 구분하여 다문화 음악 교육의 수업 지도 방안을 개발하 였고, FGI를 통해 교육적 효과성과 개선 방안을 살펴보았다. 양금의 세계적 전파 과정 자체가 스토 리텔링의 효과를 가지고 있기 때문에 이를 통해 문화 상대주의적 시각을 형성할 수 있고, 다른 나라 의 양금류 음악의 경험을 통해 단순히 타문화를 이해하는 것에서 나아가 감정을 공감하고 존중하는 태도를 익힐 수 있다. 수업 적용 시 가상 악기 앱 등의 활용을 통해 디지털 리터러시와 음악 창작 능력 도 동시에 강화할 수 있다. 또한 우리나라 향악의 음조직과 중국의 음조직을 통한 창작활동은 비서 구권의 음악 구조를 이해하고 세계시민으로서의 음악적 정체성과 균형 잡힌 시각을 형성할 수 있는 등 양금을 활용한 다문화 음악 수업의 교육적 효과성을 확인하였다.
