This study aims to scientifically examine the expressive structure and meaning of nonghyeon—a core vibrato technique of the Korean gayageum—through quantifiable and visualized acoustic data. Using ‘Sonic Visualiser’ and the ‘Expressive Means Vamp Plugins' Pitch Vibrato function’, it analyzed the frequency oscillation patterns of nonghyeon in “Gyemyeon Chosudaeyeop”, a piece from the male gagok repertoire, performed by Hong Won-gi, Kim Jeong-ja, and Jeong Hae-im. The results revealed notable variation in nonghyeon width, frequency, and duration across performers, suggesting that nonghyeon reflects individual musical interpretation. Unlike Western vibrato, some nonghyeon displayed irregular, complex waveforms. This indicates that nonghyeon plays a substantive role in melodic flow and expressive nuance. The study proposes a quantitative method for analyzing traditional ornamentation, offering potential for future research in folk music or AI-based models for traditional music analysis.

본 연구는 한국 전통 현악기인 가야금의 핵심 연주 기법 중 농현을 대상으로 하여, 음향적 특징을 정량적이고 시각화된 데이터로 분석함으로써 음악적 표현의 구조와 의미를 과학적으로 규명하고 자 하였다. 이에 본 연구는 음향 분석 도구 ‘Sonic Visualiser’와 ‘Expressive Means Vamp Plugins’의 Pitch Vibrato 분석 기능을 활용하여, 농현의 주파수 진동 양상을 정밀하게 추출하고 시각적으로 표 현하였다. 분석 대상은 남창 가곡 중 ‘계면 초수대엽’으로, 연주자는 홍원기, 김정자, 정해임이다. 분석 결과, 연주자마다 농현의 진동 폭과 빈도, 지속 시간이 상이하게 나타났으며, 이는 개인의 음악적 해석과 표현 방식에 따라 농현의 파형이 일정하지 않다는 것을 시사한다. 특히, 일부 농현은 서양 음악의 비브라토와 같이 정현파 형태를 따르지 않고 불규칙적이고 복합적인 파형을 보이는 특 징이 발견되었다. 이는 농현이 단순한 장식음 이상의 기능을 하며, 선율 흐름과 연주자의 음악 표현 에 실질적 영향을 미친다는 근거로 해석될 수 있다. 본 연구는 전통음악의 대표적 시김새인 농현을 청각적 인식이 아닌 계량적 영역으로 끌어내어 구체화하고자 하였으며, 향후 민속악 선율의 농현 분석, 또는 인공지능 기반 전통음악 분석 모델 구 축 등으로 확장 가능한 학술적 연구 방법을 제안하고자 한다.
