This study compares how female characters are portrayed in Shounen and Shoujo anime. The results show that in terms of physical characteristics, teenagers were most frequently depicted in both Shounen and Shoujo. In Shounen, characters with average or plump physiques were common, while in Shoujo, only slim and average physiques were observed. Regarding the level of exposure, characters with slight or no exposure appeared predominantly in both genres. As for breast size, Shounen featured a variety, including average, large, and small sizes, but Shoujo mostly depicted smaller sizes. In terms of personality traits, “Kuudere” characters were prevalent in Shounen, whereas “Deredere” characters were more common in Shoujo. Both genres featured many kind characters. Regarding roles, female characters in Shounen were primarily supporting characters, while in Shoujo, they were mostly leads. Character types in Shounen included dedicated individuals, independent warriors, loyalists, and decision- makers, whereas in Shoujo, romantics, optimists, and protectors were frequent. Professionally, many female characters in Shounen were portrayed as soldiers or fighters, whereas in Shoujo, students were relatively more common. In terms of relationships, enemies, comrades, and rivals were significant in Shounen, while friends and lovers were predominant in Shoujo. Stereotypes in both genres included hypersexualized women and Smurfette-type women. These results demonstrate that both Shounen and Shoujo set female characters based on narratives that align with the characteristics of each genre. Particularly in Shounen, a variety of roles focused on battles were shown, while in Shoujo, there was a tendency for some degree of sexual objectification influenced by the “burusera” culture. This indicates that while traditional gender roles and norms are partially reflected, there is also an attempt to break away from traditional gender stereotypes.

본 연구에서는 일본의 쇼넨(소년)과 쇼죠(소녀) 애니메이션이 여성 캐릭터를 어떻게 묘사하는지 그 특성을 비교했다. 연구결과, 신체적 특성에서는 쇼넨과 쇼죠 모두에서 10대가 가장 많이 등장했다. 쇼넨에서는 보통 체격이나 통통한 체격이 많았고, 쇼죠에서는 날씬한 체격과 보통 체격만 확인됐다. 노출도에서는 쇼넨과 쇼죠 모두에서 노출도가 약간 있거나 없는 캐릭터가 주로 등장했다. 가 슴 크기는 쇼넨에서는 보통, 큰 편, 작은 편 등 다양했지만, 쇼죠에서는 대부분 작은 편이 많았다. 성격적 특성에서는 쇼넨에서는 ‘쿠우데레(감정을 드러내지 않고 냉소적)’가 많았고, 쇼죠에서는 ‘데레데레(꾸밈없이 밝고 사랑스러운)’가 많았다. 성격에서는 쇼넨과 쇼죠 모두에서 착한 캐릭터가 많이 등장했다. 역할 적 특성에서는 쇼넨에서의 여성 캐릭터는 주로 조연이었고, 쇼죠에서의 여성 캐 릭터는 대부분 주연이었다. 캐릭터 유형에서는 쇼넨에서는 헌신가, 독립 전사, 의리녀, 결단가가 많은 반면, 쇼죠에서는 로맨티스트, 낙관주의자, 보호자 등이 많았다. 직업은 쇼넨에서는 군인･투사로 등장하는 여성 캐릭터가 많았고, 쇼죠 에서는 학생이 비교적 많았다. 관계의 경우, 쇼넨에서는 적과 동료, 라이벌이 중 요하게 등장했으나 쇼죠에서는 친구와 연인이 주를 이루었다. 고정관념에서는 쇼넨과 쇼죠 모두 과성화된 여성과 스머페트 타입 여성만 등장했다. 이러한 결 과는 쇼넨과 쇼죠 모두 장르의 특성에 부합하는 서사를 바탕으로 여성 캐릭터를 설정하고 있음을 보여준다. 특히 쇼넨의 경우, 전투 중심의 다양한 역할을 보여 준 반면, 쇼죠에서는 ‘부루세라’ 문화의 영향을 받아 일정 부분 성적 대상화 경 향이 확인되었다. 이는 전통적인 성역할과 규범을 어느 정도 반영하면서도 동시 에 전통적인 성 고정관념에서 벗어나려는 새로운 시도를 하고 있음을 보여준다.
