This study focuses on the character Byeonhakdo, who exhibits a distinct shape adaptation in the content of “Chunhyangjeon,” and traces the pattern and meaning of his adaptation. Byunhakdo, whose narrative role was fixed as Chunhyang’s antagonist, did not change substantially in the different versions of the classic novel, and he appeared as a greedy, old womanizer with a taste for the arts. However, in the movie Chun Hyang Deon(2000), the drama Sassy Girl Chunhyang(2005), and the webtoon Freaky Chunhyang(2023), Byeonhakdo is drastically transformed into the young and handsome nemesis of Lee Do-ryung, a helper who has a crush on Chun Hyang, and Chunhyang’s lover with a heroic figure. Cultural contents are transforming and expanding the romance novel character of “Chunhyangjeon,” embodying different ways of love narratives. Considering that the production of cultural contents is inevitably sensitive to the audience’s needs, the transformation of “Chunhyangjeon” as a love narrative is meaningful in that it partly reflects the needs of the audience in each period. Conversely, Byeonhakdo's transformation is accompanied by the transformation of other characters, which becomes the driving force of the narrative change of “Chunhyangjeon,” proving that it is a classic constantly renewed by its audience. This study of the transformation of an archetypal and iconic classical character is relevant as it allows us to deepen the discussion of contentification strategies for one or multiple works to understand the contemporary needs of modern audiences and their understanding of classical literature.

이 연구는 <춘향전>의 문화콘텐츠에서 뚜렷한 형상 변모를 보이는 ‘변학도’ 캐릭터에 주목 하여 변모의 양상과 의미를 추적하였다. <춘향전>의 반동인물로 서사적 역할이 고정되었던 변학도는 고전소설 이본 전승 과정에서 변이의 폭이 크지 않았던 인물로 탐악한 늙은이나 여 색을 밝히는 풍류남아의 형상으로 등장한다. 그러나 영화 <춘향뎐>(2000), 드라마 <쾌걸춘 향>(2005), 웹툰 <발칙한 춘향>(2023)에서 변학도는 젊고 잘생긴 이 도령의 연적, 춘향을 짝 사랑하는 조력자, 영웅의 형상을 갖춘 춘향의 연인으로 대폭 변화된다. 이상의 문화콘텐츠들은 고전소설 <춘향전>의 연애소설적 성격을 변주하고 확장하면서 각 기 다른 방식의 애정 서사를 구현하고 있다. 문화콘텐츠의 생산은 향유층의 요구에 민감할 수밖에 없다는 점을 고려한다면 <춘향전>의 애정 서사로서의 변주는 각 시기별 향유층의 요 구를 일정 부분 반영하다는 점에서 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 한편, 변학도의 변모는 다른 인물들 의 변화를 수반함으로써 <춘향전> 서사 변이의 추동력이 되는데 이는 고전소설 <춘향전>이 향유자에 의해 부단히 새로워지는 고전임을 증명한다. 전형적이자 대표적인 고전 캐릭터의 변모를 살펴보는 연구는 한 작품 혹은 여러 작품의 콘텐츠화 전략을 살펴보는 논의에서 한발 나아가 현대인의 고전문학에 대한 이해 및 요구를 파악해 볼 수 있게 한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
