This study examines how the traditional Jangseungje (village guardian pole rite) has been reconstructed and practiced in the contemporary community of Jang-dong, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon. Drawing on the 2025 oral history collection Jang-dong Jangseungje, the study analyzes the formation and institutionalization of the rite, the transformation from wooden to stone jangseung, and the festivalization and participatory structure of the event, as narrated by local informants. The research reveals that the Jangseungje functions not only as a ritual of folk belief but also as a cultural device for crisis response, community identity formation, and memorialization. Combining oral history methodology, folkloristic interpretation, and symbolic anthropology, this study demonstrates how Jangseungje has evolved into a living cultural practice and an enduring local tradition. It offers a valuable perspective on the modern inheritance and heritage-making of Korean folk beliefs.

본 연구는 대전광역시 대덕구 장동에서 지속되고 있는 장승제를 중심으로, 민속신앙이 현대 공동체 안에서 어떻게 재구성되고 실천되는지를 고찰하였다. 『장동 장승제』 구술채록자료(2025)를 바탕으로, 장승제의 형성과 제도화, 목장 승에서 석장승으로의 전환, 장승제의 축제화와 주민 참여 양상 등을 구술자의 서사를 통해 분석하였다. 이를 통해 장승제가 단순한 신앙의례를 넘어 공동체 내부의 위기 대응, 정체성 강화, 기억의 제도화 수단으로 기능하고 있음을 확 인하였다. 나아가 본 연구는 구술사 방법, 민속지적 해석, 상징 인류학적 분석 을 통합하여, 장승제가 공동체 문화 실천으로서 어떻게 변화하고 존속하는지를 심층적으로 분석하였다. 이는 지역 민속신앙의 현대적 계승 방식과 문화유산화 과정을 이해하는 데 학술적 의의를 지닌다.
