The principal argument of this paper may be summarized as follows. First, previous studies claimed that the earliest appearance of ‘Shobu’ was in August 1966. However, based on my own research, it was actually January 23, 1965. Second, previous studies have claimed that ‘Shobu’ was first used in the context of Hwatu(a Korean card game) and gradually became part of everyday language. However, my findings indicate that ‘Shobu’ originally functioned as a slang term used in illicit and covert dealings involving public officials and that this slang gradually entered colloquial usage. Third, previous studies have assumed that ‘Shobu’ was originally used to mean both ‘bargaining’ and ‘settling the outcome’. However, ‘Shobu’ initially carried the meaning of ‘bargaining’, with the sense of ‘settling the outcome’ being added later. Over time, it gradually came to be used exclusively in the sense of ‘settling the outcome’.

본고에서는 일본어 ‘勝負(しょうぶ)’에서 유래한 ‘쇼부’를 검토한 결과, 선행 연구의 오류와 선행 연구가 밝히지 못했던 사실을 새롭게 찾아낼 수 있었다. 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 선행 연구는 ‘쇼부’의 초출이 1966년 8월 27일이라고 했다. 그러나 필자가 조사한 바 에 따르면, 초출은 그보다 빠른 1965년 1월 23일이었다. 둘째, 선행 연구는 ‘쇼부’가 화투판에서 쓰인 후, 점차 일상어가 됐다고 말했다. 그러나 ‘쇼 부’는 공직자(경찰 공무원, 세무 공무원, 경찰청 공무원 등)와 금전으로 불법적이고 음성적인 ‘흥정’을 할 때 사용했던 은어(隱語)였던 ‘쇼부’가 점차 일상어, 특히 속어(俗語)가 됐던 것이 었다. 셋째, 선행 연구는 ‘쇼부’가 애초부터 ‘흥정’과 ‘결판’으로 사용됐다고 생각했다. 그러나 ‘쇼부’는 처음에는 ‘흥정’의 의미로 쓰이다가, 나중에 여기에 ‘결판’의 의미가 추가됐다. 그 리고 점차 ‘결판’의 의미로 주로 사용됐다.
