If the main storyline of Ise Monogatari is the old style pure love of a man who does not easily give up on love, Heichu Monogatari focuses on realistic and pragmatic relationships between men and women. The structure and characteristics of Heichu Monogatari are clearly influneced by “Ise Monogatari.” The author of Heichu Monogatari appears to have regarded the idealized male– female relationships depicted in Ise Monogatari as fictional, and instead sought to highlight the lack of sincerity and the unrefined, unattractive nature of real–world male–female relationships. In other words, the author clearly intended to satirize the fact that one cannot expect the ideal male ficture depicted in Ise Monogatari from men encountered in reality. This is how the passionate and sophisticated man Narihara and the promiscuous man Heichu were created. In other words, the author collected and compiled various love stories about frivolous and untrustworthy men circulating in society into Heichu Monogatari under the name “Heichu,”
