This study examines the representational strategies of cultural memory and their socio– political implications in the 2021 NHK Taiga drama Seiten wo Tsuke (Reach Beyond the Blue Sky), the first historical drama of the Reiwa era. The series features Shibusawa Eiichi—the “father of modern Japanese capitalism”—as a narrative vehicle to reconstruct modern Japanese history around the ideal of “harmony between morality and economy,” a theme closely aligned with the Kishida administration’s “New Capitalism” initiative. While the drama promotes communal solidarity and public well–being, it problematically portrays Japan’s imperial wars—such as the Sino–Japanese and Russo–Japanese Wars—as morally justified “righteous wars,” while eliding the realities of colonial violence. The kikō (travelogue) segment enhances the drama’s affective impact by presenting historical sites—temples, shrines, graves, and monuments—as “places of memory,” fostering emotional engagement and embodied remembrance. Ultimately, Seiten wo Tsuke functions not merely as historical fiction but as a cultural apparatus that projects contemporary national ideals onto the past, demonstrating how NHK Taiga dramas operate as powerful platforms for shaping collective identity and national memory in Japan.

본고는 레이와 시대에 첫 제작되어 2021년에 방영된 NHK 대하드라마「청천을 찔러라」를 중심으로, 이 작품이 수행하는 문화적 기억의 재현 방식과 그 사회적 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 본 드라마는 ‘근대 일본 자본주의의 아버지’ 시부사와 에이이치를 NHK 대하드라마 사상 최 초로 주인공으로 삼아, 그의 생애를 조명하며 일본 근현대사를 “도덕과 경제의 조화”라는 이 상 속에 재구성한다. 특히 시부사와의 윤리적 자본주의는 전 기시다 내각의 ‘새로운 자본주 의’ 담론과 접합되어, 국가 비전의 철학적 기반으로 소환된다. 드라마는 공동체적 연대와 모두의 행복을 이상으로 제시하며, 코로나 이후의 불안한 사회 분위기 속에서 사회 통합을 지향하는 메시지를 전달한다. 그러나 그 이면에는 청일전쟁, 러일 전쟁, 제1차 세계대전 등의 침략전쟁을 ‘인의(仁義)의 전쟁’으로 정당화하고, 주요 역사적 사 건들을 경제 성장과 국가 발전의 계기로 묘사되며, 그 폭력성과 식민 지배의 실상은 서사 구 조 속에서 배제된다. 또한 드라마 종영 후 방영되는 기행(紀行) 코너는 감각적 재현을 통해 역사적 장소를 문화적 기억의 장으로 체험하게 하며, 절, 신사, 무덤 등은 ‘기억의 매체로서의 장소’로 기능한다. 시청자는 이를 통해 역사적 인물과 감정적 유대감을 형성하고, 장소를 통 한 기억의 내면화를 경험하게 된다. 「청천을 찔러라」는 단순한 역사극을 넘어, 현재의 국가 비전과 사회적 욕망을 과거에 투사 함으로써 NHK 대하드라마가 역사 인식과 사회적 가치 형성에 기여하는 미디어로서 작동함 을 보여준다. 이는 NHK 대하드라마가 문화적 기억공간으로서 현대 일본 사회의 이념과 집단 정체성을 구성하는 영향력 있는 매체임을 시사한다.
