This paper examines the storytelling adaptation of the 2021 film What Happened to Our Nest Egg!?, directed by Maeda Tetsu. In the process of adapting the original novel into a film, variations in storytelling revitalized both the production and consumption of its cultural content. As Japanese society enters an elderly “super–aged era”, the importance of financial stability and retirement preparedness has grown significantly. While the film reflects the greater concerns of Japanese society, which faces accelerating low birthrates and increased aging, amid a prolonged economic downturn, its narrative unfolds in a cheerful and comedic tone. Instead of contemplating the seriousness of the issues embedded in the original work, the film attempts to transform them by presenting them in a humorous and exaggerated way. Through the storytelling shift of rendering social realities in a humorous light, the director reinforces the connection to the original work’s identity while deepening its emotional resonance. The ending, in which the family that once built their lives within the shared space of a ‘home’ moves into individual spaces, reveals the paradox of separation. This highlights social changes, namely the collapse of traditional society that once upheld inherited values and customs, and prompts viewers to confront the realities of an era that demands a shift in values. At the same time, the film’s storytelling seeks to convey a sense of optimism to its audience, affirming the will to move forward even in the face of hardship and despair.

본고는 마에다 데쓰(前田哲) 감독의 영화인 <노후자금이 없습니다!>(2021)의 스토리텔링 전 환 방식을 살펴보고자 한다. 영화는 원천콘텐츠인 소설의 매체 전환의 과정에서 스토리텔링의 변주를 통해 문화콘텐츠의 생산과 향유를 활성화하였다. 초고령사회로 진입하면서 경제적 안정과 노후준비의 중요성이 더욱 높아졌다. 영화는 장기불 황 속에 저출산 고령화가 가속화되고 있는 일본사회의 고민을 그대로 보여주지만, 서사의 전개 는 유쾌하고 코믹하다. 원작이 함유한 문제의 심각성을 관조하지 않고, 영화는 이를 희화화하여 변모를 시도한 것이다. 감독은 현상의 희화화라는 스토리텔링 전환을 통해 원작의 정체성과 연 계를 강화하여 정서적 여운을 강화하고 있다. ‘집’이라는 공간에서 삶을 꾸려가던 가족이 각자의 공간으로 이동하는 결말은 ‘이산(離散)의 역설성’을 드러내주고 있다. 이는 사회적 변화, 즉 전통과 유산을 이어가는 전통사회의 붕괴와 가치관의 변화가 요구되는 시대적 환경을 일깨우며 현실을 직시하도록 이끈다. 그러면서도 영 화의 스토리텔링은 삶의 시련과 절망 속에서도 삶을 전진하려는 긍정의 정서를 향유층에게 전 달하고자 한다.
