This study explores how sorrow is narrativized in Unyŏnjŏn, a Korean classical novel with a framed narrative structure, and how this sorrow evokes distinct aesthetic experiences in the reader. Focusing on spatial descriptions and linguistic expressions—such as poetry, letters, and dialogue—that reveal characters’ inner emotions, the study analyzes the forms and characteristics of sorrow represented in the text. In the outer frame of the story, the sorrow and mourning over the life of Prince Anpyeong—a historical figure reimagined through fiction—are conveyed through depictions of the royal residence and the poetic language of Unyŏn and Kim Jin-sa. Within the inner narrative, sorrow emerges from the tragic development and failure of the love between Unyŏn and Kim Jin-sa, as well as from the empathetic grief of the court ladies. Readers experience these three layers of sorrow through the narrative flow, which in turn generates three types of aesthetic reading experiences: emotional purification, existential reflection, and linguistic appreciation. First, emotional purification arises as readers feel compassion for the characters and achieve catharsis through shared sorrow. Second, existential reflection is prompted by the outer frame’s meditation on the transience and limitations of human life, particularly through the portrayal of Prince Anpyeong’s decline. Third, linguistic appreciation stems from the literary stylization of sorrow throughout the narrative, enabling readers to respond to the aesthetic beauty of the language itself. Together, these experiences demonstrate how Unyŏn-jŏn not only narrates sorrow but also transforms it into a profound and multifaceted reading experience.

본 연구의 목적은 액자형 구조 소설인 <운영전>에서 비애의 감정을 서사화하는 방식과 독자의 독서 미감을 본격적으로 연구하는 것이다. <운영전>의 공간 묘사와 인물의 내면을 나타내는 시, 편지, 말 등의 언 어적 표현에 주목하여 여기서 창출되는 비애의 양상과 성격을 분석하 고 독자의 독서 미감을 논의한다. <운영전>의 도입 액자와 종결 액자 에서는 수성궁의 공간 묘사와 운영과 김진사의 시, 말을 통해 역사적 인물이면서 소설적으로 재구성된 안평대군의 영화와 쇠락의 삶에 대한 비애와 애도의 감정이 서사화된다. 내부 이야기에서는 운영과 김진사 의 사랑의 전개와 그 좌절에서 창출되는 비애와 궁녀들의 가지 연민에 서 비롯되는 비애의 감정이 서사화된다. 독자는 <운영전>의 서사의 흐 름 속에서 이러한 세 가지 층위의 비애의 감정을 느끼게 되며, 이 과정 에서 감정적 정화, 삶에 대한 성찰, 언어의 미학적 경험이라는 독서 미 감을 경험하게 된다. 첫 번째 독서 미감인 감정적 정화는 독자가 타인 의 삶에서 연민을 느끼고 슬픔을 통해 감정을 정화하고 카타르시스를 느낄 수 있도록 하며 정서적 충일감을 맛보게 하는 것이다. 두 번째 독서 미감인 삶에 대한 성찰은 <운영전>의 도입 액자와 종결 액자의 안 평대군의 삶에 대한 비애와 애도의 표현에서 독자가 인간의 삶의 유한 성과 근원적 한계를 성찰하도록 하는 것이다. 세 번째 독서 미감인 언 어의 미학적 경험은 <운영전> 전반에서 서사화되는 비애의 감정이 정 제된 문학적 언어로 대상화되어 표현됨으로써 독자는 비애의 아름다움 에 감응하며 언어의 미학적 경험을 하게 되는 것이다.
