This study stems from an intellectual curiosity and deep interest in Jean Calvin (1509–1564) as a man of letters—an aspect often overshadowed by his towering reputation as a Reformation leader. Beyond his theological and philosophical thought, the research examines Calvin’s role and influence in the history of the French language and literature. It explores the stylistic characteristics of Calvin’s French prose, particularly in The Institutes of the Christian Religion, which, alongside the works of Rabelais, has been praised as “the greatest monument of French prose in the first half of the 16th century.” The methodology is twofold: one strand involves a literature review for the historical evaluations and their context, which leads to illuminating Calvin’s contributions to the development of the French language and literature. The other strand analyzes Calvin’s French prose style—its sentence structure, vocabulary, and rhetorical techniques—based on these historical assessments. Through this approach, the study seeks to re-evaluate Calvin as a linguistic reformer, while also shedding light on the theological truth that his rhetorical prowess aimed to convey. This perspective underscores that Calvin’s prose was not merely a matter of stylistic refinement, but a deliberate instrument for effectively communicating truth. Ultimately, this study contributes to an interdisciplinary framework that bridges literature and theology, language and thought.

본 연구는 종교개혁가라는 거대한 명성 속에 가려진 칼뱅의 문필가 로서의 면모에 대한 호기심과 흥미로부터 출발하고 있다. 종교와 철학 사상을 넘어 프랑스어와 문학의 역사에서 칼뱅이 차지하는 위치와 역 할을 주목하고, 라블레의 책과 함께 “16세기 전반기 프랑스 산문의 최고 기념비”로 칭송받는 『기독교 강요』의 저자인 칼뱅의 프랑스어의 특징이 무엇인지 고찰하고자 한다. 연구 방법은 역사적 평가에 관한 문헌 조사와 그 맥락을 읽는 해석을 한 축으로 하고, 이를 통해 프랑스언어의 발달과 문학의 영역에서 칼뱅의 업적을 조명한다. 다른 축으로 는 역사적 평가의 결과를 바탕으로 칼뱅의 프랑스어 문체의 특징을 문장 구조와 어휘, 수사적 기법을 통해 살펴본다. 이를 통해 칼뱅을 언어 개혁가로 재조명함과 동시에, 그의 수사적 역량이 추구한 신학적 진리의 본질 또한 함께 조명하고자 한다. 이는 칼뱅의 문체가 단순한 형식적 완성도를 넘어서, 진리를 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 수단으로 기능했다는 점에서, 문학과 신학, 언어와 사상의 경계를 넘는 학제 간 연구의 토대를 제공할 것이다.
