This study demonstrates that the four major festivals of ancient Greece functioned not merely as athletic or religious events, but as cultural practices that shaped communal identity through repetition and formal structures. In Description of Greece, Pausanias meticulously documents the periodic cycles, spatial organization, ritual procedures, and placement of monuments within each festival, showing how these events embodied communal order through sensorially accessible elements such as visual symbols and architectural arrangements. This paper analyzes how the repetitive structure of the festivals connected mythical time with the present, and how their formalized movements, symbols, and spatial layouts led participants to internalize communal ethics and hierarchy through bodily experience. This process entailed the selective transmission of memory, the distribution of honor, and the dynamic reconfiguration of collective identity. The festivals not only reenacted the past through repetition but also served as performative arenas where social order was continually reconstructed. By examining these structures, this study explores the theoretical implications of ancient formal practices for organizing and imagining community in contemporary society.

본 연구는 고대 그리스의 4대 제전이 단순한 체육 경기나 종교 의례를 넘어, 반복과 형식을 통해 공동체 정체성을 구성하는 문화적 수행 장치였음을 밝힌다. 『그리스 기행』에서 파우사니아스는 제전의 주기, 공간 구성, 의례 절차, 조형물 배치 등을 세밀히 기록하며, 제전이 일정한 질서와 더불어 각종 시각적 상징과 구조물의 배열 등 감각가능한 요소들을 통해 공동체 질서를 체화시키는 방식을 보여준다. 본 논문은 제전의 반복이 어떻게 신화 속 시간과 현재를 연결하고, 제전의 정형화된 동선과 상징, 공간적 배치가 참가자의 신체적 체험을 통해 윤리와 위계의 내면화를 유도하는지를 분석한다. 이 과정은 감각 을 매개로 기억을 선택하고, 명예를 분배하며, 공동체 정체성을 역동 적으로 재편한다. 제전은 과거를 재현함과 동시에 반복을 통해 매 회 차마다 공동체의 질서를 새롭게 구성하는 수행적 무대로 기능하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 제전의 구조를 통해 고대의 형식이 현대 사회에서 공동체를 조직하고 상상하는 방식에 어떤 이론적 시사점을 제공할 수 있는지를 모색한다.
