True Jesus Church (TJC, 真耶稣教会) is a Protestant independent church that originated in China in the early 20th century. At that time, it was established by the Chinese at a time when animosity toward Christianity was rising due to the influence of Western Christianity’s imperial mission. Wei Paul (Wei Enbo, 1877-1919), who had a great influence on the early establishment of TJC, and others, mainly represent Chinese civil society such as provinces and rural areas, understand the Pentecostal movement that fits the culture and sentiment of the civil society as an important aspect of accepting the Christian faith rather than the rationalization of Christian missionaries. TJC emphasizes the importance of the Bible rather than the theology delivered by missionaries, asserts the theory of the Bible’s falsehood, and insists on supernatural mystical beliefs such as monotheism, the seventh-day observation of the Sabbath, baptism of Holy Spirit, tongues, the power of healing. It can also be seen as a characteristic of the impending apocalypse. This faith of TJC is also influenced by its Pentecostal faith, but it also reflects the way TJC seeks to find a path to Christian Chineseization with the intimacy and recognition of the middle and lower classes of China's civil society.
