This paper compares the novels of Kang Kyung-ae and Xiao Hong, and analyzes the silence of women characters. This silence is not just that they don’t speak, but the result of a social structure that makes them not able to express their feelings. In this study, the theories of Althusser’s Ideological State Apparatus and Spivak’s subaltern are referred. The paper tries to explain how not speaking and keeping silent is a way to protect emotions of female subject. In Kang Kyung-ae’s novels, women are living in family and society rules and they endure emotions with silence. In Xiao Hong’s works, women use body actions, repetition and madness to show emotion. This study shows that silence is not meaning no emotion. It is another way to keep emotion strongly. Also, it explains how female characters choose different methods to express feelings inside realism literature. This paper has meaning because it gives a chance to think again about relation between feeling, language and power.

본 논문은 강경애와 샤오홍의 소설을 비교하면서 여성 인물들의 침묵 을 분석하였다. 이 침묵은 그냥 말하지 않는 상태가 아니라, 사회 구조에 서 감정을 표현하지 못하게 만든 결과이다. 연구에서는 알튀세르의 이데 올로기 국가장치 이론과 스피박의 하위주체 개념을 참고하였다. 감정을 말로 표현하지 않고 침묵으로 남기는 것이 어떻게 여성 주체의 감정을 지키는 방식인지 살펴보았다. 강경애의 인물은 가족이나 사회 구조 속에 서 감정을 참으면서 침묵으로 살아가고, 샤오홍의 인물은 몸짓이나 반복, 광기 같은 표현으로 감정을 나타낸다. 이 연구는 침묵이 감정이 없다는 뜻이 아니라, 오히려 감정을 지키는 방법이 될 수 있다고 보여준다. 그리 고 리얼리즘 안에서 여성 인물이 감정을 표현하기 위해 어떤 방식들을 선택했는지 설명하였다. 감정과 언어, 권력 사이의 관계를 다시 생각할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다는 점에서 이 논문은 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다.
