This study examines how the newly introduced 2025 high school textbook East Asian History Journey describes the First Sino-Japanese War and analyzes its limitations. The war, which established a modern world order in Northeast Asia, inflicted severe damage on Joseon society. Korea, however, has been excluded from the international narrative dominated by Japan and China. Focusing on the July 23, 1894 "Occupation of Gyeongbokgung" incident and the second uprising of the Donghak Peasant Army, this research argues for a reinterpretation of the war from a Korean viewpoint. It contends that the term "occupation" obscures the fact that this was, in reality, a battle initiated by Japanese aggression, thereby marginalizing Korean resistance. The study proposes renaming the event the "Battle of Gyeongbokgung" to restore Korea's agency. Moreover, the second Donghak uprising should be understood as a form of resistance against colonial domination and reflected as such in historical education. It concludes that the current East Asian History Journey textbook fails to adequately convey Korea’s role as a principal party in the Sino-Japanese War.

이 논문은 2025년부터 새롭게 도입된 『동아시아 역사 기행』 교과 서에서 청일전쟁을 어떻게 서술하고 있는지를 검토하고, 그 한계를 분 석한 연구다. 청일전쟁은 동북아시아에 근대세계질서를 정착시킨 전쟁 이자, 한반도에서 조선 사회가 깊은 피해를 입은 사건이다. 그러나 일본 과 중국 중심의 국제정치 서사 속에서 조선은 철저히 배제되었고, 이는 교과서 서술에도 그대로 반영되어왔다. 본 연구는 1894년 7월 23일 ‘경 복궁 점령’ 사건과 동학농민군의 제2차 봉기를 중심으로, 청일전쟁을 조선의 시각에서 재해석해야 함을 주장한다. 특히 ‘경복궁 점령’은 실상 일본군의 침략에 의한 전투였음에도 ‘점령’이라는 용어로 인해 조선의 저항이 서사에서 소외되고 있으며, 따라서 ‘경복궁 전투’로 명명할 것을 제안한다. 또한 동학농민군의 2차 봉기를 청일전쟁과의 연결 속에서 이 해하는 시도가 필요하며, 이는 식민지적 지배에 대한 조선인들의 저항 으로서 역사교육에 반영되어야 한다고 평가했다. 그러나 현행 『동아 시아 역사 기행』 교과서는 청일전쟁에 대한 한국사의 당사자성을 충 분히 보여주지 못했다고 평가된다.
